What in bejeebuz has happened to text editing in my web browser?

Asked by Zaku (30571points) October 8th, 2019

So, at some point, it seems in the last few weeks, I noticed a terribly frustrating problem with trying to enter messages in Facebook using my Firefox web browser on Windows 7. And today, I’m seeing the same sort of problem on the Reddit web site.

The problem is the text editor windows (on those sites, but not on Fluther) does awful things such as:

* Lose focus when I hit Enter (Facebook has been doing this for even longer).

* Make it look like I can cut & paste in a message with line breaks (paragraphs), but then (either before or after I save it) ignore/remove all the line breaks and post it as one huge paragraph.

* When I try to cut & paste within the post, remove huge unselected sections.

* Cut & paste the wrong sections.

* Other chaotic nonsense.

Has anyone else run into this and does anyone know of a fix?

I’m just guessing here, but does your Firefox have the Greasemonkey extension?

@Brian1946 Hmm, no, but I do have Absolute Enable Right Click & Copy, uBlock Origin, and a few download assistants. I’ll try disabling them and see if that helps…

Ok, no, I tried disabling Absolute Enable Right Click & Copy and restarting and installing updates and it’s still being bizarre.

Mozilla usually recommends disabling ALL addons to see IF it fixes the problem. IF it fixes your problem then enable each one separately until the problem returns & then turn off the offending addon.

I tried turning off all extensions and restarting Firefox, back to Reddit and… it’s still totally insane. It looked like it wasn’t insane for a second, and then I tried to cut & paste and it lost track of where my cursor was, pasted a multi-line past with shuffled line order… chaos ensued.

Time to try a different browser…

Ok, yeah, I just tried it with another browser, Opera, and there were no problems. So it’s a Firefox thing.

I suggest that you try adding Greasemonkey to your Firefox, which was the underlying intent of my previous post.

I’m not sure if that’ll work, but it’s all I got.

@Brian1946 Oh! Ok…

I installed it, and re-tested Reddit, and it’s still crazily broken.

Was there something I was supposed to do with Greasemonkey other than install and enable it?

Not that I know of. I’m sorry it didn’t work.

My wife has a Facebook account. If you haven’t found a solution by tomorrow, I’ll ask her for her login and password (she already gave me access, but I didn’t record them), and see if it happens to me.

Here’s th Firefox Troubleshooting page for browser input problems. It requires removing a folder on your C: drive.

@Brian1946 Thanks!

@Tropical_Willie What I see there is a problem about Firefox failing to start up, which isn’t what’s happening to me. That looks like a good page to try to get Firefox answers though. I tried searching for my issue but I haven’t found a match. Maybe when I have more energy after this busy weekend I will try composing a description of the problem to submit there.
