How much volume is the typical mouth capacity for fluids?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) October 18th, 2019

In mililiters or ounces? Or one chug? What is the range for different humans? From baby’s to tall men?

I’m about 5’10” tall and I weigh about 180 lbs.

I used a measuring cup to determine my oral capacity: it only took 1/8 cup, or about 30 ml, or 1 oz of water to fill my mouth.

I used a measuring cup as well. I was able to get 2 oz. but I think if someone else was pouring there might have been room for a little more. I have a small mouth. I use a child’s toothbrush and the dentist has to use the child’s tray when making impressions.

The only cup I have is a typical bar glass. I can easily hold that, and maybe a few more spoon fulls.

I tried the experiment 3 times. I drank from a water glass to fill my mouth. Then I spit it into a container on my Mettler balance.

Results. 86 ml, 98 ml, and 101 ml. I’d go with 100 ml as a good estimate.

@LuckyGuy -Is your mouth size typical?
Did your cheeks expand upon holding the liquid or was it measured with your average “sip”?

@lucillelucillelucille i did it with full cheeks. As in, how much could I spit if I were trying to put out a fire.
I have no idea if I am typical . I’m just one, high confidence data point.

@LuckyGuy-You know I am going to try this at some point. Lol!
I wonder if one’s palate/yak is usually proportional to the size of one’s head?
I did ask my dentist once if I had a big mouth. She said it was normal. Which was a wise choice as she had she fingers in my mouth. ;)

It may be a bit off topic, but I’m capable of swallowing a full ton of bullshit, from a supervisor.

I’ll make a half ton of lemonade, from a ton of lemons…
