If you had a choice, on your bathtub, would you prefer a shower door or a curtain?

Asked by jca2 (16826points) October 24th, 2019

I’m getting a new bathtub, along with some other bathroom stuff in a week or two. Just debating between a door and a curtain. I have a curtain now but am open to ideas and suggestions.

Shower door. Keeps the heat and water in the tub. A shower curtain needs to be replaced every 6 months.

There is a curtain on the one I use now. I like it.
My husband wants a glass door….like the penguinarium at the zoo.
There are plenty of styles that look good though so when we remodel, I will let him win.

I’ve had both. I prefer curtains. Easier to clean. And you can be colorful in your choice of curtain.

I’m assuming this is a bath and shower combo. The door looks better, especially if it’s clear glass and frameless. It also makes the bathroom look bigger, because you see through to the walk, instead of the curtain. Unless, it’s a shower not used often and you can leave the curtain open, but any shower used daily you have to leave the curtain stretched out across the tub to dry well.

The advantage of the curtain is when it starts to get hard to clean, you can simply buy a new $9 liner. If there is soap build up on the liner it won’t even effect the beauty of your bathroom, while on the glass door you need to keep up with it, because all the spots will show. You live in a soft water state, so at least you don’t have a lot of lime and calcium in your water. Plus, you can get the semi-circle shower curtain holder, and it creates more elbow room in the shower than the glass.

If you like to rest your elbow out on the tub when sitting in the tub, you might not be able to if you have a shower door, it will depend if it’s a sliding door or swing door, just some things to think about.

I’d go with the glass personally, but I don’t mind the curtain. I have a curtain that I love the pattern, I’ve had it for years, but it’s in my secondary bathroom. I’ve never had a curtain in my master bathroom.

I (that is, my body) attract shower curtains whenever I come across them.
I’m like a magnet to them.

Door.

Shower curtain. Especially if you have to give small children a bath.

@rebbel Get a shower curtain with magnets.

I think doors are more sanitary.

I’ve had curtains, doors, and a separate shower stall with a glass door. Obviously the separate stall is the nicest, but if given the choice between a bathtub shower with a curtain or with a sliding glass door, I’m going to have go with the door because there’s less chance of a leak and it is less disposable. In college I remember replacing the shower curtain after it got nasty.

As I discovered recently, a shower curtain gives you more options if you develop mobility issues. When I was at my nephew’s with a modern glass enclosed shower, there was no way I could get it in it with my broken ankle post-surgery. Back at home, I bought a shower chair and have had wonderful showers sliding in and sitting on the chair. I can tuck my shower curtain liner in around it and no water goes on the floor. This was a big learning for me.

@zenvelo Personally I don’t need either; my shower is three walls and one door.
A walk-in shower?

JLeslie's avatar

I have a walk in shower no tub right now in my master bathroom. I do miss having a bathtub. If I were designing the bathroom I would put in a separate tub and a small shower, rather than the grand shower I have now. I don’t know if that’s an option for you.

@rebbel A walk in shower is best by far!

The Conrad Hotel in lower Manhattan has a separate shower room, with multiple nozzles, one can easily have three or four people in there at once.

rebbel's avatar

@zenvelo I should be more precise; it can be qualified as a step-in shower.
It measures 4 feet by 4 feet, about.

A door

If I ever find three people in my shower, I’m calling the police.

Door

Curtains grow shit on them. You can use a sponge or squeegee on a door

canidmajor's avatar

Curtain. You can sit on the edge of the tub if you need to, you can change curtains with fun pictures, you can run them through the washer. The tracks can get really gross and are hard to clean.

IMHO glass doors are a pain in the arse to clean and promote mildew. I prefer curtains. Now days, most curtains are mildew free.

Three in a shower could be entertaining. Just don’t drop the soap

JLeslie's avatar

@canid is right the tracks can get gross, but you might be able to get a swing door if you bathroom can accommodate it. Depends where your towel bar is, etc. My sisters tub has partial stationary glass and no door.

Curtain. I hate glass shower doors. And by curtain I mean one fabric liner. I just put the curtain in the washer and hang it back up. No problem. Easy. Glass doors always look dirty. I’ve had them and I hate them. Yes, in bathrooms that do not get used, they look beautiful.

Being in an apartment, I don’t have much of a choice. I have to use a curtain. However, I do prefer the door ones. My parent’s house has a slide door kind. I like them better for the heat intake, nice look, and because you don’t have to keep buying them. Once worn out, you need a new curtain eventually.
