Why hasn’t our President recognized Transgender Day of Remembrance?

The Transgender Day of Remembrance, also known as the International Transgender Day of Remembrance, has been observed annually on November 20 as a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia. It is a day to draw attention to the continued violence endured by transgender people.

The Trump administration has indeed worsened the situation for transgender people with its repeated assaults on their rights. One of its first acts was to roll back protections for trans students in schools. Job discrimination, already pervasive, worsened when President Trump imposed a ban on serving openly in the U.S. military, the nation’s largest employer of trans people.
Moreover, a new proposed rule from the Department of Health and Human Services would permit health care providers to discriminate against transgender people in the name of “religious freedom.” In addition to increased risk of violence, the estimated 1.4 million trans Americans already have sizable barriers to health care; an alarming 31 percent of this group lack access to health services, according to a 2017 report from NPR.

He is too busy making fun of Vindman for wearing his uniform during the hearing (which he is required to do), and pardoning convicted war criminals.

Trump’s constituency would never approve, and he isn’t brave enough to stand up to them.

But lets be fair @Jonsblond most Rep/cons are way to busy licking the boots of their corporate masters, to observe a Transgender day of remembrance.
In the first place, no one has ever heard of it. So, probably the same reason he doesn’t recognize National Talk like a Pirate Day, or the day the first Soda Fountain was opened in Cleveland, Ohio.
Secondly, there’s a lot going on in the nation and in the world. The new Inspector General report is out, and the Durham and Barr investigations will be presented to the Senate on December 11th.
Thirdly, the LGBT community has been extremely hostile and defamatory of the Trump administration,. and spreads a lot of defamatory information on groups such as the Salvation Army, Chick Fillet, etc. To endorse such a group or culture would be to endorse their actions,
You never having heard of it does not constitute “no one ever heard of it”.
Ignorance is bliss.
@Yellowdog You comparing it to talk like a pirate day just shows how wrong Republicans are. Republicans sure are aware of transgender people when they need to use a restroom. The LGBT community has every right to be upset with this administration because this administration is harmful to their wellbeing. Just look at my details. It explains only a handful of harmful things this administration has done.
I had to move my trans son away from family and friends so he could live in an accepting community with accepting teachers. He wasn’t accepted by his school in the rural Trump loving town we lived in. A school administrator suggested conversion therapy for him. That was the moment we knew we had to move for our child’s wellbeing. He is loved and accepted for who he is thanks to welcoming schools in a liberal city. He doesn’t have to fear for his life anymore.
There is no legitimate reason to do so.
So, you say Trump is anti-Transgender?
There is a lot of concern about men in women’s restrooms, and men competing in women’s sports as women cannot compete for awards and scholarships. Don’t blame Trump.
I’ve never seen any anti-LGBT or same-sex marriage opposition from Trump. But I do know that LGBT’s have effectively boycotted the Salvation Army, even though they have had a non-discriminatory policy enforced since 1991 (one of the earliest to include sexual identity and sexual orientation).
Why don’t you wake up and recognize what all is going on in the country and world, and how busy the news cycle is? I don’t think there is much fit for a hate group to give lip service to,
^ Look at my link.
LGBT people are now a hate group? Wow.
I did. People have freedom of association.
I don’t have to bake a cake for a transgender wedding, or marry a same sex couple, or hire a transgender youth leader for a church youth group. That’s not discrimination.
The Boy Scouts went bankrupt and defunct in order to recognize transgender “rights”. There are plenty of venues and opportunities for homosexuals and transgender people in societyl Yet they are out there targeting, suing, and boycotting groups, businesses and agencies who they disagree with.
I hadn’t heard of it either, but I’m not the fucking president of the United States. I don’t have hundreds of staff members whose job it is to keep the met up to date. There is no excuse for him to have ignored this day, except that he’s a homophobic, privileged, white asshole, as usual. It was deliberately ignored.
I think it’s controversial, he’s older, maybe doesn’t fully understand it like many people, and is just avoiding it.
That’s another reason he’s such a shitty president. Doesn’t even TRY to understand. He can not act “like many people” and just avoid it. He’s the damn PRESIDENT of ”...With liberty and justice for all.” As the president he has to embody those words.
@KNOWITALL I appreciate your thoughts on the subject. At least yours isn’t tainted with bigotry unlike someone else here, but then I know you are an ally so I wouldn’t expect that from you. :)
Bernie Sanders has recognized this day.
“Trans rights are human rights. We are going to fight to end all forms of discrimination and violence against our trans family.” #TransDayOfRemembrance- Bernie Sanders
That (the OP’s question) would deal with other people when Trump is clearly more interested in himself.
@Jonsblond I’m in Trump country, I hear it all the time. Fact is, we can love like Jesus, without judgement or not. These churches are so divided on the subject our city actually published a list in the paper of accepting churches or hardline churches. It was equally divided.
So imo, Trump is hedging his bets on 2020 not saying anything.
I dont judge people who believe as @Yellowdog. Plenty of good people were against freeing the blacks, women voting, etc…in the end, they cant stop evolution or human nature. But what I personally wont do is alienate ANYONE from God.
Coming from a public health perspective, I have seen a LOT about Transgender Day of Remembrance today (so the argument that no one knows about it is absurd).
Public health cares a lot about transgender health. And as a sexual health instructor and researcher, it is very important to me. With high rates of bullying, stigma, bias, abuse, violence, murder and suicide of people who are transgender, it should be important to all of us.
I recently taught my undergrad students about sexual and physical violence and made sure to highlight that many laws are not written to protect LGBTQIA+ individuals, even though this population is more likely to experience diverse forms of abuse and violence.
Love to you and your family today (and all days) @jonsblond. And may our culture only grow more accepting of diverse forms of identity and expression.
I don’t recall telling anyone what my beliefs are about the LGBT community.
I was one of the first, if not THE first, boy to join Camp Fire Girls when they started including boys in 1975. I was born a Hermaphrodite, and was regularly assaulted in gym class, which I skipped, throughout the 1970s and 1980s. One of the few places I WAS accepted was church. I pioneered in the Transgender community, but by the early 2000s it was mostly interested in bashing conservatives.
In spite of my early participation, I am sick of people using sexual orientation as an excuse to bash Christians, the church, Focus on the Family, the Salvation Army, Chick Fil A, My Pillow, Hobby Lobby, etc. These organizations have a right to do good things without being libeled, slandered, and assaulted.
You are just using it as an excuse to bash Trump when he is under intense assault from the Dems and the media.
Everyone doesn’t need to recognize every day designated by a proper name. It’s ridiculous the number of memorial days named today. I’ve never heard of this day myself.
@Yellowdog To be fair, your posts didnt sound very friendly. When you proclaim yourself a Christian and preacher, that comes with some resonsibilities imo. If I misunderstood, I apologize.
And the OP said ‘our President’ which is actually refreshing, and the only reason I read further.
@Yellowdog
“I am sick of people using sexual orientation as an excuse to bash Christians, the church, Focus on the Family, the Salvation Army, Chick Fil A, My Pillow, Hobby Lobby, etc. These organizations have a right to do good things without being libeled, slandered, and assaulted.”
First of all, being transgender has nothing to do with sexual identity. We are speaking about gender.
Second, transgender people are only asking to not be bashed by these organizations that seek to harm them. They are the victims in all of this, not these organizations or Trump. They have the power over transgender people. Transgender people only want acceptance and equality. As it stands now they don’t have these things thanks to Trump.
@Sagacious I hope you will take this opportunity to learn about this day and the innocent people it honors. It would be the right thing to do. The Christian thing to do. You should take a lesson from @KNOWITALL.
@Yellowdog My child and his safety is more important than bashing our president. How dare you say I’m using my child to bash him. Did you even read the link I shared that explains what he has done to hurt my child and others like him?
Kumbaya moment humming Imagine. ;)
@Yellowdog I hope you can understand why I personally despise our President. He is actively doing things that will hurt my child. I have a legitimate reason to not like the man. I appreciate your civility on the other question tonight about transvestites. I would hope we could continue that civility here.
@Yellowdog The link I shared isn’t about LGBT people being denied having a cake baked for them. It’s about having healthcare and jobs being denied because they are transgender. That’s a huge difference. Every person should have access to healthcare and work. This is what transgender people are upset about. They deserve basic human rights.
Do you feel like you need his validation or acknowledgment? I mean, what impact do you think it would have on the country or yourself? I doubt it would make anyone feel better, if anything it would probably just be seen as a fake sentiment at this point.
I understand your frustration about uprooting your life to get your kid in a better environment. I’ve moved several times to get my kid in a safer neighborhood and better school districts, I don’t regret anything I’ve done or any sacrifices I’ve made for my kid because I want him to have a better life.
It sounds like you moved your son to a better situation for him and that’s great, I just don’t understand how Trump is responsible for the way your son was treated by the school district. Was the school openly accepting of transgender students before Trump was elected?
