Can you see in your mind’s eye?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) November 22nd, 2019 from iPhone

When you close your eyes can you actually see/imagine an image? If I tell you to picture a rainbow or a table, do you actually see it? Or, do you just know what they look like from memory and can describe it?

When you close your eyes without being told to picture anything do you see any colors? Do you just see black?

I’m only talking about while awake, this is not a sleep or dream question.

Yes.
Yes,I can see it
I know from memory and can picture it as well.
I try to go “blank“when meditating but that can be difficult at times.
I wish my mom was still around.
She was legally blind but I wonder if things changed for her in that regard once she lost most of her sight?

I see it.

I can see it, but it doesn’t make my eyes create color. It’s in my mind’s eye, which can do colors, yes.

I tried to envision a rainbow but I saw a stone bridge instead. Go figure.

I see nothing. Total darkness. Two days ago someone I know asked me what I see when I close my eyes. She asked if I can picture a red ball. I answered no. She asked if it’s just black, total darkness, and I said yes. She told me I have aphantasia. She said that supposedly only 3% of the population has it, but she thinks it’s much more. She also told me it’s fairly common among Ashkenazi Jews (we both are Ashkenazi Jews). She said most people actually see what they are imagining.

I can see stuff without closing my eyes, say it & up it pops.
I may go cross-eyed but you can’t have it all your own way.
