Pretty sure Cato is the first miniature Great Dane ever.

A Labrador. With weird ears and a thin tail.

A miniature Great Dane could be a pure bred GD that didn’t grow to the breed standard specifications of a Great Dane. For a male, they are supposed to stand 30” high with the female standing at 28”. Some don’t grow that tall and are considered minis. They are not recognized as a breed within themselves. In other words, they aren’t as “giant” as a regular GD and are considered dwarfed to a breed standard GD. It’s not as rare as you might think

I’d probably think he’s the runt of the litter.

@si3techSorry, your search returned zero results for “miniature great dane””

I am 100% sure he is not a purebred anything. The pound carried him as a boxer / lab. The vet’s guess was Great Dane. I’ve been praying he wouldn’t grow into a full sized Great Dane! Yesterday I tried to measure him at the withers to compare his size to the average 7 month old Great Dane. Couldn’t get an exact reading because he was pretty sure the measuring tape was a rattle snake, but I came up with ~20 inches. To my relief, it was about 7 inches shorter than average.

From the pics you posted on another thread, he doesn’t look like a Dane nor a Ridgeback. I had a boxer/Lab for 15 years & they look nothing alike. I can tell you that when my Boxer/Lab didn’t like someone that the hair raised up along the spine. I could tell which of the people walking past my house had been teasing him when I wasn’t around by how high the hair stood up as he barked. Any other time, he was docile & loving to practically everyone…even the mailman once he got to know him!!!

I trained him to bark…NOT bite & he did his job well. He barked at anyone outside the fence; but IF I let them inside the fence, you would have thought that they were his best friend!!! Somewhere around the 10 year mark, he’d bark at any repairmen when they first drove up, ignore them when I let them inside the fence, then bark at them again when they went back outside the fence to get any needed parts, & then ignore them when they came back in. Most people won’t come inside a fence where there’s a barking dog & that’s all that I wanted!!! You said you loved him, so love him for the mixed up breeds that he is & accept that the pound put a label on him just to get someone to adopt him.

Fortunately he doesn’t seem to be much of a barker. I hate that almost more than anything. He’s a mutt (and I’ve known that from day one @LadyMarissa) but in many ways he looks SOOO much like a Great Dane. But then sometimes I think Boxer. But then he’s got those floppy ears that are always getting screwed up, and really expressive eyes and face that remind me of a hound dog.
I’ll get a pic of when he looks MOST like a Great Dane…it’s when he’s sitting on his hind haunches and it’s like his front legs are so long they’re never going to end.

This kind of shows it, and he’s getting the jowls of Great Dane. But there is something more….he is definitely of the molossus breed, which could be anything from an Argentine Polar Dog to a pit bull (hope not that.) Today someone posted a pictre of their rottweiler and I went, “Yep! That too!”

So, is there a miniature great dane or not?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t know. I haven’t really looked. I just thought “miniature Great Dane” sounded funny!

I went looking. Couldn’t really find anything except a whole bunch of Cato-pictures!:

@si3tech According to everything that I’ve read, Mini Great Dane is not a recognized breed, but is what Danes who don’t grow to the standard size of 30” are called by those who love them.
