What are some things that make you happy, bring you enjoyment that other people do not share your enthusiasm for?

Asked by Vignette (2890points) November 25th, 2019

Now that I think about it, I just realized why I like to be alone in that not many people I know share the same love to for hike off trail that I have. Going for hikes with people on bridal and walking paths is OK but I am in heaven breaking trail on my hikes. I can sit for hours bird watching and be thrilled to death while others are bored to death.

Ceramic glaze formulation

Primitive firing techniques
Wood & refinishing project
Color theory
Fishing (used to love it)
Rocks
Any artwork I do never requires others & I like it that way.

What, exactly, is decopauge @jca2? I heard it on The Proposal. Not sure what it is.

I enjoy knitting spaghetti, licking windows & pointing at geese.

Decoupage is when you take an object (a box, a jewelry box, a flat piece of wood, etc.) and you take printed images and seal them onto the item with a watery glue mixture. Then you polyurethane it many times so it looks like the images belong there. Before you put the images down, you can leave the object’s natural finish or you can paint it, faux finish it, etc.

I’ve done jewelry boxes, where you can take any old jewelry box, sand it, stain or paint it and decoupage it. I’ve put personal photos onto wood plaques. I have a soap dispenser that I decoupaged a Christmas scene onto. Stuff like that.

Making angled half lap joints in wood stretchers and legs to make a table base.
Sawing, planing, jointing, measuring, scribing, chiseling.
Love it!

Documentaries, I love them. Doesn’t matter what they’re about per se, as long as it’s new information to me. (Key my Swiss Army knife post the other day haha)

ucme's avatar

@KNOWITALL I love a good documentary too, watch quite a few. Anything from JFK assassination to war time stuff.

@KNOWITALL I love docs too! This is one of my all time favs only because it highlights just how far we as a society have gone and still go it hide the real ugly side of factory production at the cost of human suffering and then to ignore the repercussions of really bad corporate choices.

@Vignette Yes that is excellent.

Reading is the main one for me. I genuinely find it enjoyable; unfortunately many of my good friends don’t much care for it.

I also like to go off-trail sometimes, it’s just that the last time I did that the woods got thicker and I saw bear scat and I figured I better get back to the trail before I get mauled.

I’m also into vinyl (sizable community of people online who consider it a hobby, but no one I know in real life is much into it) as well as conlanging (creating your own language). That’s even more obscure and even hard to find other people online who are into that.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme @Vignette Same. The only ones I can’t tolerate are the corporate cattle farms, and beating calves and hogs, any animal abuse is intolerable and makes me want to get murder-y.

ucme's avatar

@KNOWITALL I watch the ones about serial killers too & no, this doesn’t make me weird lol
Just has this macabre fascination, really compelling to watch.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme Agreed, abnormal psych is really interesting to me, too. Whats really gascinating are all the killers who never get caught, and how dna is catching them now.

ucme's avatar

@KNOWITALL Yeah, no surprise they made movies out of them.
I liked My Friend Dahmer was so funny in parts which I didn’t expect.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme I like seeing how they get away with it, and how they get caught. Like BTK, used his church stationary for a note to police….duh….

ucme's avatar

Yeah that was cocky if you get my meaning.

The Scientific Method excites me. I like data. Because, without data, all you have is an opinion.
You say, “it’s hot.” I ask, “how hot? Let’s measure the temperature.” Use a Thermoworks thermapen, or a non contact IR device, or a thermal imager. Anything, but know the temperature.
How heavy is it? Let’s get the Mettler and weigh it. Wow! I can see moisture evaporating. The piece is getting lighter! Cool!!!

I curl up with a Scientific American and read the ink off the pages.
