What jobs have you done that in retrospect you feel you were taken advantage of?

Asked by JLeslie (65794points) November 29th, 2019 from iPhone

Or, maybe even at the time you felt taken advantage of, or even abused.

Could be anything. Long hours or not being promoted. Other possibilities are underpaid or bad working environment. So many possibilities.

Was there anything that you didn’t realize was excessive at the time, but then when you moved into another job, or talked to other people about there jobs, you realized what had been asked of you was unusual or simply not always done.

Did it completely ruin the job for you? Or, were there good things too? Did you stay in the bad situation longer than you should have?

I cleaned an assisted living center. The management employed an entire family that was full of drug addicts and other people of questionable character. One of them attacked me and when I complained to my immediate supervisor, he told me there was nothing he could do. Even though this happened in a room full of people, and it was possible somebody noticed, they wouldn’t admit to have seen it. I quit with no notice.

Yes, but it’s a very long story and if I told it, it would personally identify me and others.

Let’s just say that my boss was trying to save her own job (in which she had done something unethical and likely illegal) and she got rid of 2–3 of us who reported to her, as a means of self preservation.

Karma. It didn’t work. She got canned 6 months later.

I used to apply for a job at a big language center. I was put on a 1-month trial before I was officially chosen for the job. Someone gave me a book and asked me to make lesson plans out of it. I made one and sent her the file and specifically asked for feedback since it was my first lesson plan. No reply. I asked people around to remind her to check her email. Still no reply. Then one day she suddenly emailed me saying I was about to reach my deadline. She didn’t told me about any deadline before, and with only one day and some 30 pages I had to tell her to find someone else for the job. She replied with a mean email telling me how I had forever ruined my reputation for being untrustworthy.

There was also the big boss. He told me he wanted to test my teaching skill and told me I would do a mock one-on-one lesson. I wasn’t given any material until the last 15 minutes when I was already in the building. It was some practice exercise and I assumed that I was to correct someone’s work. Then he posed as a student and I tried my best to explain the “mistakes” the “student” made. The boss told me I failed to help the “student” remember the lesson and I should prepare more teaching materials. Like seriously? You only told me what I was supposed to do 15 minutes ago!

Looking back, I had.a feeling I was being singled out from the work circle. They seemed to treat me like some sort of incompetent outsider that deserved to be made fun of. Well, if I was really incompetent, then I would appreciate they said that right in my face during the interview. It was extremely petty to pull out this kind of backstabbing.

Second job out of college, I managed a frame shop at a glass company. My shop was on the second floor, overlooking the glass company. No heat, no air conditioning, no windows. The owners (two brothers) were terrible alcoholics who screamed obscenities at everyone any chance they got. The older brother also liked to throw pieces of wood at us for fun to “keep us on our toes”. Plus, I was only making $18K/year. I lasted a year and quit.

My first teaching gig, after being there six years, they started laying off a bunch of people. They laid off my wife. They let go all of the program directors except me. I was told I was now in charge of all the programs. No raise, no stipend. Just a “be thankful your employed and do what your told” from the head of finance. I was then asked to start laying off teachers and had to meet with them alone one by one. It was all very ugly. I quit eight months later.

Working with Alzheimers sufferers, a bunch of the ladies would frequently pinch my bum or kiss me on the cheek.

As a 19yr old carer it made me blush at first, but I grew used to it, after all, they weren’t in control of their minds.
