Is there any way to make an iPad or laptop bendable so there is less chance it would break?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) November 29th, 2019 from iPhone

When I put my iPad or laptop in a travel bag I always worry it might endure stress or risk breaking. If it had some give I wouldn’t be so concerned. Similar to a skyscraper being built to sway in winds and earthquakes.

In fact, even my iPhone in my pocket is a concern, especially if I sit down. That’s why I don’t keep it in my pocket.

I don’t mean we lay people adding something to existing products, I mean manufacturing items with some flexibility.

I’m missing something. Why not just put it in a padded cover?

Theoretically yes, but the costs would be enormous. The main piece(s) of an iPad or any other computer are the motherboard and similar sub-boards. These are rigid pieces of plastic with all sorts of components soldered onto them, and then thin narrow traces of wire or conductors that lead from place to place.

They could make the mother board a little more flexible, but the etched circuits are built to such tolerances that even bending them a little can break the circuit. And that’s bad.

Of course, Apple could replace all the printed circuits with actual wire (what they did in the 1960s) but you would end up with a much larger, heavier, and slower device.

For all intents and purposes the answer is no.

You could structurally. But it would increase the weight and thickness.

And I used to think I wanted a thicker and heavier iPhone if it meant a bigger battery and longer life. Then I found my old OG iPhone. That thing was a brick. I do not want to deal with that again.

@janbb A padded cover won’t make it bendable. It also makes it thicker.

Soak it overnight in gasoline. That should soften up those hard plastics.

I thought you were worrying more about it breaking then the bendability. I carry my phone in a light case in my pocket and my ipad in a rigid case. Neither have ever broken on me.

Yes, breaking.

I have to ask, Who has a problem with breaking laptops?
