I used an electric hair trimmer and buzzed off most of my hair. Needed help for the back half. I have never trimmed anyone’s else’s hair. Now I pay the $20 to the hair stylist to shave me almost bald every two months.
I always like my own cuts, and usually do a good job on others.
When I was in my early 30’s, I used to cut my own hair. I was living in DC at the time & hair cuts weren’t cheap!!! I hadn’t had any luck finding a stylist who cut it the way I requested. Out of pure frustration, I decided to try it myself & was pleasantly surprised when it turned out looking pretty good. I cut it about once a month for several years before deciding I wanted something different. I wasn’t proficient enough to change it on my own.
During this time, I was dating a guy who had gorgeous, long, black hair. The ends were pretty scraggly & I finally convinced him that I could trim the ends & make it look better & grow out better WITHOUT actually cutting it hardly at all. The first time I just trimmed the split ends which made it look healthier. The next time I trimmed the longer scraggly parts so it was more even. After that I started trimming about ½ inch every month. After getting rid of the split ends & then evening t out, he didn’t notice that I was actually trimming some off because it was looking so much healthier than it did when I started. In place of thinning frizzies, he had a full, thick, healthy looking hair. Friends were complimenting him on how much better it looked. We eventually broke up & he wouldn’t let anyone else touch his hair.
I’ve been cutting my own hair for years now, ever since the Great Recession of 2008, when the biz slacked off and I couldn’t afford to have someone else do it.
I am in awe of people who can cut their own hair. I am neither that coordinated or that frugal.
Hell, I tried cutting my dog’s hair once and she can out looking like she went through a blender.
I started cutting my own hair ever since my 20’s. I decided to cut my own hair when a professional barber told me that I looked better before the haircut. I said something like, “Do you think that I’ll ever come back here again?”
The I got a very cheap electric hair clipper from my sister. I thought, “Why pay someone for a lousy haircut when I can do that for free.”
Cut my own hair for about 50 years and saved many hundreds of dollars and a lot of time.
When I was a teenager I cut my hair all the time, and I did get compliments.
I cut my hair now and then now. My hair doesn’t get compliments anymore no matter who cuts it.
@JLeslie -I used to cut mine but had to stop the madness,Lol
The woman who cuts my hair now is really good. I pay way too much for the cut. My hair is so much thinner now it never looks great unless I have extensions in. Plus, I go to zumba almost every day, so if you run into me during the daytime, there is a 90% chance my hair is in a ponytail.
I used to do haircuts on my ex’s cousin. Maybe about forty years ago.
Never did a haircut on myself !
@Tropical_Willie – My hub gives himself a flat top and does a very good job. He will not let me help him after that one incident…
I cut my bangs when they need it.
I’ve never cut the rest of my hair myself.
I’ve cut my daughter’s hair and friend’s hair, and do a really good job. It’s from a lifetime of watching the hairdresser’s techniques (cutting on an angle, cutting layers, how to make sure both sides are the same length, etc.).
When I moved in ‘82 I was too far from the best barber I had to that point and dreaded finding another. I worked out a method I’ve been using ever since.
It’s usually pretty good but sometimes the back/neck need some touchup.
