Since milk in the colonies comes in those ludicrously huge jugs, why do store not just have massive milk tanks from which you can refill your empty jugs?

It doesn’t only come in huge jugs. You can buy a quart, a gallon and sometimes just a pint.
You mean vats like the French use to sell a jug of cheap table wine?
It would make sense, but milk spoils too easily and can breed bacteria too easily, so the vat would have to be cleaned multiple times a day.
I’ve always thought buying milk in gallons was silly.
I think that we should put milk in everything in sight that isn’t nailed down!
We’re getting to that point with all the hallabaloo about plastics in the oceans…
The risk of pathogens is much too severe to allow such haphazard handling and containment.
@stans right. Plus there are local dairys who use glass, you bring back the empties for re-use. At least here in cattle country.
We recycle our gallon milk containers @kritipner.
I think we should ALL go up onto the roof and pour milk down the chimney!

As someone said, milk is too prone to spoiling, and spoiling quickly. Have you ever seen what they go through to clean the inside of milk tanker? It’s insane.

Massive milk tanks?
Funny way to describe breasts!
Why are we attacking each other over milk?
I didn’t see the attacks, it went past your eyes?
Hircus Civis Eblanensis! He had buckgoat paps on him, soft ones for orphans. Ho, Lord! Twins of his bosom. Lord save us! And ho! Hey? What all men. Hot? His tittering daughters of. Whawk?
^^ If that’s a reference to something, I don’t get it.
Its from Finnigan’s Wake by James Joyce but seemed appropriate to the discussion.
Because we don’t do it that way. You can buy milk in containers from 16 oz to 128 oz. No problem. We in the colonies are concerned with sanitation and cleanliness which self-service milk jug filling would not provide.
