In "Django Unchained", they are eating what they call "white cake". What exactly is "white cake"?

Asked by ragingloli (52231points) December 16th, 2019

What does it actually taste of, and why are they not naming it after what it tastes of?
White is not a fucking flavour.

It is called white cake because it is white, rather than yellow or chocolate. I suppose they could call it no yolks cake, but that seems obnoxious to me.

@ragingloli: “White is not a fucking flavour.”

Wait until you hear about white bread, white rice, and white wine.

It’s a plain white cake type common in the USA, which has various other plain white baked products like (often awful) industrial white bread.

What is the difference between white cake and vanilla cake?
The main difference between a white cake and a vanilla cake is that a white cake uses egg whites rather than whole eggs, as the yolks tint the batter yellow.”

- From the Classic White Cake page By Olivia on the “liv for cake” (sic) web site.

Oh, and if you despise the linguistic folly of “white cake”, you may also like the expression common in some parts of the USA (the east and/or south?) where it is said that a person might “eat some McDonald’s”. I.e. using the name of the restaurant (usually an industrial fast food chain) as the thing they are talking about eating, when they mean some “food” from such a restaurant brand name.

It’s white cake!

It does not have a flavor other than sweet and possibly some vanilla. It’s actually pretty good.

It’s flavor goes well with white wine, white rice and white bread.

Cake made with white flour and white sugar.

ucme's avatar

It sounds like it must be vile, more like shite cake!

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Don’t knock it till you try it.

ucme's avatar

I can assure you, I will never try it!

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

More for me then.

When I was small I thought since white cake had less colour than yellow cake, it must also have less flavour.
I knew with my first bite that was not so.

Poor people sometimes could only make cake out of cheap brown flour and molasses. So “White Cake” was something special.
