What would be regarded as obscene consumption at Christmas?

On a recent thread, somebody made a criticism of Christmas, in that it ”...celebrates and encourages obscene consumption ”

What is that point where perfectly OK Christmas consumption becomes obscene Christmas consumption? Might be good to know before I shop.
