I’ve spent most of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area. I’ve also lived in Reno for a few years.

@Brian1946 hello fellow Canadian

@Demosthenes do you work in tech?

rebbel's avatar

Europe.
I don’t work in tech.

ihavereturned's avatar

@rebbel haha! I’m really interested because it seems like many are from SF and I’m curious what they do there

rebbel's avatar

@ihavereturned Yeah, I figured ;-)

Demosthenes's avatar

@ihavereturned Nope! Though many of my friends do and you’d be hard-pressed to afford it here without a job in tech. Once I finish my graduate degree, I will likely not be returning to the Bay Area, though I can’t see myself leaving California or Nevada if I’m to stay in the U.S.

I live on the isthmus in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Just moved here a little over a year ago but it felt like home immediately. I’ve moved around a bunch during my life, five states and dozens of cities, but this is the first place that felt like home to me. I’m never leaving.

raum's avatar

I have lived in California since 1978, in the San Francisco east bay area for the last 23 years.

Basically about thirteen years behind @zenvelo.

Jons_Blond's avatar

^I lived in SLO and Morro Bay in 90–91. :)

ihavereturned's avatar

@Jonsblond what was it about Madison that made it feel like home?

Jons_Blond's avatar

^The water. The people. The topography.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I’ve been to Madison. It was nice. The stereotypes, about cheese, are 100% true. When my friend and I first pulled in, we went to a liquor store. There was a cheese section, in a fucking liquor store. Not like a small selection. There was a 8–10 ft section, with various cheeses. In a liquor store!
I only saw two black people there, in a week. One of them, was my traveling partner. It was actually hilarious, when we ran across the other black guy. He, and my friend, hugged. We saw the other black guy, in a narrow bar, in downtown Madison. When the two saw each other, they hugged. I laughed endlessly, about it. My friend, was like what’s SO funny? I said, you never met that guy before, but you hugged him, like you were family. He said, that’s the first black guy I’ve seen, since Chicago. It hadn’t occurred to me, until then. But , he was right.
We traveled, all over Wisconsin. Sometimes 4–5 hours, to each destination. And only saw the one black dude…

It reminded me of when I lived in Germany. Rolling hills, low sky, cold, but more farm land. We almost hit a cow, like three random times.
We were there, around Thanksgiving. I had forgotten, how it was, to be SO cold. Temperatures, were in the teens

I stayed at a hundred year old house, for several days, that used to have a farm around it. One day, I walked the property. They had/have horses. I was petting one, when a large black Horse came after me. There was a fence between us, but I ran away. I know he could have crashed through it. I wasn’t going to stick around, and give him a reason to. He didn’t want me around. So. I got the fuck out of “his” territory…

It was a cool state though… I enjoyed my time there…

@MrGrimm I don’t know where you went in Madison but it’s very diverse here. I heard several languages as I was shopping today. We have a large population of Hispanic, Hmong, Native American and Black here. My son’s school is very diverse. That’s why we moved here. We needed to escape white rural America.

Coolhandluke's avatar

@PaisleyFaye you know me well!! But no, I’ve always thought that about you.

@Johnsblond . When my friend and I first got there, it took two straight days of driving, we met up with our friends, in what they called downtown Madison. I assume the city is much more vast. We only stayed there that one night. Then we drove 4–5 hours to an old farmhouse, where we stayed, or based. We spent the week driving hours, to different places, to visit my friend’s girlfriend’s family and friends. I would say that most of the places we went, were rural…

We visited a few strip clubs, on the way up. One in Ohio. We had a blast.
We picked up his girlfriend, in Wisconsin, so, we didn’t visit anymore strip clubs, on the way back to Charleston. :(

I used to own a van. So. His girlfriend paid me $1,000 to take some of her belongings to her family. I blew that money, and about $800, of my own, on the trip. No financial profit from the trip. But it was awesome. In retrospect, we should have circumvented Chicago. We got there at about 3:30PM, and got stuck in traffic. It took about 4 hours, just to get through Chicago, and we ran out of gas. So. We had to go into Chicago, to refill.

I met a girl, at Ohio strip club, that was like a twin, of one of my ex-girlfriends. I blew $400, on her alone. I kinda wish, we never stopped there. But, fuck it, it was nice to see her again. Even though, it wasn’t “her.”..

What a crazy world….

Jons_Blond's avatar

^I live downtown. Less than a mile from the city center. You are welcome to visit us any time. Jon and I will show you a good time, though I can’t promise strippers. :)

MrGrimm888's avatar

Lol. I’m past my strip club days. Too much money spent on nothing.

I only brought it up, because they were definitely memorable moments, on a journey. Especially meeting my-ex girlfriend’s twin… That was crazy.

I appreciate your hospitality, and I’d love to take you up on your offer. But it’s a 2–3 day drive, and I don’t fly anymore. But, I promise to PM you, if I’m ever headed that way again.

Please hit me up, if you are ever around Charleston, SC. I would love to meet you, and your hubby. Charleston, is always one of the top cities, to visit in most travel magazines. If you want a break from the cold, this is the place. It’s a historically important, and wonderful place.
I’d love to show it off, to you guys. The architecture, is amazing. Lots of old churches, a creepy ancient jail, and we even have the US Yorktown, sitting in our harbor. The Yorktown, is incredible. It sits, in a place called Patriot’s point. There are multiple vessels from different wars there. Even a WWll sub. I used to be a deckhand, on the Fort Sumter tour boats. And Fort Moultrie, is close by. The Civil War started here. And the Revolutionary War, was partly won here. The “Swamp Fox,” fucked the British up, in Hell Hole Swamp. A place where I fish, all the time.
We have it all. Charlestown Landing, is like 3 minutes from my house. There are beautiful beaches, and the Battery, is on the peninsula. The music scene, is tremendous. The place where I spent many years, as HOS, is full of musical history. Hootie, and the Blowfish, were the house band there. They played every Thursday -Saturday, for years, at The Windjammer. You know, Darius Rutger. The Zach Brown band, Bog Head Todd, and the Monsters, etc, all started off there. It’s a hole in the wall bar, right on the ocean. Great venue. I stopped by there, last Friday, to see Stop Light Observations. An up, and coming band, sponsored by the lead guitarist, from Hootie and the Blowfish. He won several awards, for producing some shows, at the Charleston City Music Hall. That’s the same place Dave Cheppelle, restarted his stand up act. I worked that event, as HOS, of the upper floors. I got to meet him, and there’s a picture of me, and him, on Trifecta’s FB page. Trifecta, is one of the companies I worked for, as a LEO….

I’m just rambling now, so I’ll stop. But, your next vacation, you should consider Charleston.

Anyways, happy holidays

Peace n love.
