How do they know what you're thinking and fine/ jail you where there is no freedom of thought?

Asked by flo (13313points) December 19th, 2019

Someone running for political office said “I’m pro freedom of thought”. There is freedom of expression, via vocal protest, writing, etc. for which people get jailed in some places/cases. But what is “freedom of thought”, since no one can read/hear what is in another person’s mind?

‘They’ don’t.

I think I get what you’re asking. If those in power or their minions in a fascist government say they are banning “freedom of thought” how can they find out what you are thinking? They can only find out and punish you if they catch you expressing it somehow; online, in print or in a protest movement. That is how there is no freedom of thought.

By listening to what you say, and reading what you write, and looking at what you do.

Your thoughts online at a protest, in print, listening to what you say would be freedom of expression right?

And from that they can draw conclusions about what you think.

…I edited my last post, to add by the way.
@ragingloli Hmmmm, Yes, they can draw conclusions about what you think. I just noticed the looking at what you do part in your post.
