What is an easy way to get over wanting to be free and independent from society?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) January 10th, 2020

What is an easy way with out going out and purchasing an island or mansion without millions of dollars? Or buying lotto tickets? Or committing a crime?

Get more engaged with society and you may not want to escape it.

zenvelo's avatar

As usual, you want “the easy way”. But there is no easy way; as with most things you need to work at it.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@zenvelo Ok. What is the normal way?

Most losers just take drugs.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@gondwanalon Right! What is the hard way?

Move to Alaska and become a squatter

Give up your house, go to the woods, build a hut, grow your veg and wheat, employ a chicken and a goat.
Ditch your phone, or your internet/social media.
Don’t give a fog about other’s opinions.

@RedDeerGuy1 Find one’s passion and work hard at being the best one can be at that passion. Complete things one starts, and use the learning from the experience to expand one’s awareness and goals.

And realize that material comfort and material wealth are hollow achievements. Be of service to others.

Move to bear country, wear a pork chop necklace and see how it goes. :)

An easy way to get over it is to actually try what @rebbel describes and realize you’re not cut out for it.

What do you mean “free and independent from society”? What is your idea here?

I’m scared of sending RDG to live in the woods. As large as he describes himself, somebody might think they saw Bigfoot, and try to catch him and teach him tricks!

Find friends who own property and go live there with permission. That would be very easy for me to do, if I chose to, not sure about you. They can deal with property taxes and all that, you’ll have someone fairly close if needed.

it’s certainly harder than you’d think, RedDeer. Have you tried just heading to the woods by yourself to survive before? Even people who think they’re cut out for it, are NOT.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@KNOWITALL I have a 4 day wilderness survival course that I passed.

Edit wilderness first aid.

@Darth_Algar To have the freedom to do what I deem right. Like eating, sleeping and bathing when ever I want. The freedom from lines and being put on hold with the government or isp.

I would like to be able to learn for fun and stop when It stops being fun.

I am partly there. Just some loose threads and I can be free.

janbb's avatar

^^ I thought that’s pretty much the way you are living?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@janbb Yes. Almost perfect.

@RedDeerGuy1 “To have the freedom to do what I deem right. Like eating, sleeping and bathing when ever I want.”

You’re an adult. You can do that already.

“The freedom from lines and being put on hold with the government or isp.”

Aren’t you pretty much dependent on government aid, though? How would you sustain yourself?

And yeah, no one likes being put on hold. That’s hardly a reason to remove oneself from society however. Frankly, I don’t think such a thing is truly possible anyway. Even the most rugged mountain men still have to head into the nearest town to pick up supplies every now and then.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Darth_Algar Ok. So I need more long term goals. Lol. I am generally happy now. I have lots of free time and am seeing a recreational therapist in march.
I might take up a golf diving range again. I might take a second language. Maybe French.

Darth_Algar's avatar

To be frank, I think you need to set some short-term goals and actually work towards them first. Fixating on things that are, as yet, out of reach, is only going to lead to discouragement.

I saw this documentary about a older man who lived in the woods of Alaska , it was a very insightful eyeopening story.
Perils etc
He learned how to do carpentry and build his own home, how to hide food sources from wild animals, how to handle wild wolves surrounding his property, as well as a huge Grizzly Bear that blocked his front door.

This man (Richard Dick Proenneke) had skills that he learned throughout his life BEFORE he moved up to Alaska and lived there off and on for 30 years, He had a pilot that delivered goods and provided conversation with another human being.( socialization to civil life)

As hospitals are not around for hundreds of miles a good idea of how to handle emergency situations ,like accidents with gun , mauling, or broken leg/arm and antibiotics ,penicillin and how to administer etc is required if one wants to survive in the wilds. How to fish, knowledge of herbs, wildlife patterns, etc also a must.

The easiest way is to be born rich, and have it all handed to you.

Inspired_2write's avatar

As long as one is not hurting anybody nor oneself, then do your own thing and never mind what others say.

Does this mean you have given up on going back to school? If living a life of leisure suits you, always taking the path of least resistance, then that is what you should do. Good luck.

I don’t think you want to be alone. You might feel trapped a sometimes by rules, but look at how long you have been on Fluther. You want to be a part of things. You need friendships. You already want to be involved with people, and a part of society.
Your question asks how to get over wanting to be free of society, but you don’t want to. You fear not be part of society. You are, you just don’t understand your place, and what is expected or desired from you. That is what you want to escape, the uncertainty.

Do you understand how much work goes into living off grid? Go to youtube and do a search for “homestead” and watch what all you’ll have to do for yourself because you don’t have the money to pay someone else to do it. You won’t have a landlord to call when the sink backs up as you’ll need to fix it yourself. You’ll need to raise your own food, and probably your own meat. Those things don’t care that you might want to wait until tomorrow to get to them. They want it now

Having a credit card defeats the whole purpose of going off grid. There’s no bus service to get you into town to pick up supplies so you’ll need a reliable car. Car breaks down, you’re screwed. There’s no trash pickup and you’ll need to keep the bears and coyotes away from your place. In theory, going off grid sounds great. The reality, it’s a lot of work
