How is 2020 shaping up for you?
My dad took pictures like crazy all through the 60s, 70s and 80s. They were in a slide projector. We didn’t have many hard copy prints. Just once a year or so we’d have Family Picture Night. Mom would pop up a big old thing of popcorn, add an entire stick of butter and we’d go through the old familiar ones and see the new ones from that year.
My folks split in 1980,and somehow my sister wound up with all the slides.
I have been asking her for copies since the 80s.
She flat ignored me. For years and years she ignored me.
The other day I got a flash drive in the mail with her return address. No note saying what it was. I stared at it for a while. wondering if it was a new magic flash drive, then just tossed it in with my other flash drives.
About 10 minutes went by and suddenly I yelled ”HOLY SHIT!!!” And jumped for the drive, heart pounding. I plugged it in….and there they were. I started crying. My entire childhood laid out in front of me. Spent several hours copying them to a folder on my computer, so that Carbonite would back them up for me. 411 pictures.
A year ago I got a negative scanner, planning to scan all the 35mm negatives I’d taken from 1980 to 2003. I started that project yesterday. I’m only half way through 1985 and I’ve scanned over 100 negatives! Well, 1985 was a very busy year. Had my middle daughter, and two weeks later my sister got married.
I’m emailing pictures out like crazy to who ever is in the pics.
So my 2020 is starting out with a looooong long walk down memory lane.
How’s your going?

It’s going ok. Trying to figure out this situation with my husband in TN and I’m back and forth between TN and FL.
January is my birthday month, so that’s good.
I found out I’m definitely going to owe an extra $18k more or less to the IRS. This is above and beyond taxes on regular income. If my husband hadn’t taken this job we wouldn’t owe it. Basically, he worked for free in 2019. It drives me crazy if I think about it. I might also owe state tax that I would not have owed because of his work also. We need to confirm that we need to file taxes in TN, I’m not sure.
I’ve been having a lot of fun with friends dancing and watching TV together and I’ve met some new people.
I’ve been doing cleaning projects. I cleaned the fake plants today and vacuumed the back patio. Friday I’m going to clean the carpet I think.
Can I answer this after November’s Presidential election? : )
My company just declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. So, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I’ll check back in a month.
Ask again on December 11, 2020.
I don’t know. Hasn’t been much different than 2019 so far. I’m hoping it gets better.
I got literally addicted to animal crossing pocket camp. That’s been keeping me busy on nights I can’t sleep.
Finished a big chapter of my thesis. Drew some stuff. Reach the last page of my comic. Broke off with a toxic friend.
It was a wild start so far.
It’s been great! Got a new job, left my old one. Even bought a house!!
Good so far, paid off a debt in full, made major headway in research ( Located Ancestor from 1600’s birth, marriage, death records , after France Archives updated digitized ALL archive holdings , which is huge).
Freed up another $200 per month to apply for savings in 2020.
Cleaned out items not used for two years and gave to the thrift shop, cleaned out storage area, and now working on parring down my living space to make it more efficient and organized.
Applied for consideration on a project on Historic Canada ( they make Heritage minutes that
are broadcast on TV for one minute ( I presented an Ancestor that was recognized as one of
Canada’s First Pioneers) Its very competitive and I may have to wait it out as they had many
before me that also applied.( hopefully this year!)
Lost excess weight 15–20 lbs, its a start and hope to keep this off with healthier food choices.
@Dutchess_lll I might’ve cheated a liiiiiitle bit. The house was something I was prepping for in 2019, and the job- I turned my 2 weeks in on Christmas.
I finished a project without any client-side corrections.
Good start, I would think.
I didn’t know that there was such a thing asa 35 mm negative scanner. I’ll look into that.
Anyway…
2020 is not going to start for me until February 12th. That’s when heart experts will attempt to get my heart to beat normally. They’ll go into my heart with catheters that will seek out and destroy the extraneous electrical impulses that are interfering with my hearts normal function. Electro physiologist gave a 60 to 80% chance of success. My heart has been in persistent lone atrial fibrillation since 10–10-2019.
Hopefully 2020 is the year that I once again walk among the living. HA!
@gondwanalon. It can scan different formats. I got an Epson Perfection V550 Photo. You know I’ve held on to all of these 35 mm negatives for 40 years, waiting for this kind of technology to happen. Didn’t know what the technology might be until about 2000. Then I had to wait for a home unit to become affordable.
Here is an idea of how it works. I think those slides are 20mm? The two slots above that are where 35 mm goes.
Please let us know how it goes for you, man.
Thanks a lot for the information. I have fun digitizing old final records, tapes and music from the internet. Got a mountain of old negatives from back in the day. Bet there’s some great old pictures in there somewhere. It will be like sifting through pay-dirt for gold nuggets.
FYI: been dealing with a-fib for 19 years. Drugs worked well at keeping my heart beating normally for 6 years then slowly stopped workin. A radio frequency catheter ablation worked great for 2½ years then suddenly failed. Then a mini-maze operation worked great for 6 years then it also suddenly failed for no apparent reason. Hoping that this cryo balloon catheter ablation will buy me some more time.
Good health!
Right? That’s what this feels like. My oldest is 41. I am now scanning her 6th birthday party.
Here are some tips: Get some cotton gloves from Amazon to handle the negatives with.
Scan at 3200 DPI
It’s only been two weeks. However, no one close to me has died or been maimed or suffered a severe illness, so I’m good.
Day to day, it’s pretty boring with just working. However, my daughter (middle school age) is into seeing theater, so we saw Disney’s Newsies the other day and we have tickets to see some upcoming musicals in other areas within the next few months. I’m considering getting tickets to Mean Girls in Boston but February in Boston might mean a snow storm and so I am leery.
Well, I am tripping down memory lane.
