How can I reset my default photo opener to Paint?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47050points) February 2nd, 2020

I send pictures to myself via email. It used to open them in Paint, but it doesn’t any more. I have to literally take a screen print and copy and paste it into paint.
I check my “Open with” option, and paint isn’t in there.
What is the path to get to paint?

Thanks. I am copying and pasting into paint. I’m don’t know why my “open with” options changed.

Yeah. Stupid Fing updates. I’ll keep looking.

What surprises me is that you use Paint at all, when there are so many far more capable picture viewers out there, free of charge.

It’s all I need for opening, cropping and saving, but I know what you’re saying. Even Word is a far more user friendly, and more versitile, for manipulating the pictures. I just want to set it as my default.again, and I don’t understand why they’re making it so hard to do.

The twice-yearly Windows major updates mess up the defaults. Annoying.

For the directions below, you need the location of the program. On my machine it’s ”%windir%\system32\mspaint.exe”

Right-click on a file whose default program you want to change. Select Open With > Choose Another App.

Check the box that says “Always use this app to open .[file extension] files.” If the program you want to use is displayed, select it and click OK.

If the program isn’t listed, scroll down and click on More Apps.

If it still isn’t listed, scroll down and click on “Look for another app on this PC”.

That will open a dialog box that will let you drill down to find the .exe file for the application you want to make the default.

That is exactly what I was looking for Jay. Thank you SO much.

It’s the last step I needed educating on. I got through the first two myself. They’re self explanatory. But then I was stumped.

Success! It was insane! But I did it. I’ll save this question.

Val, MSpaint is in C:\WINDOWS\system32 . Change it to view icons. It’s a lot easier than reading a long ass list of nonsense.
