Canadians in America: would you go back?

Asked by Smashley (12581points) February 3rd, 2020

Plenty of Americans will threaten to move to Canada as a way of expressing political dissatisfaction. Some even do it.

The reasons any particular person emigrates are many, but since Trump, a lot of Canadians I know say they wouldn’t move here for anything. To those of you who can actually compare the two with life experience and not stereotypes: why did you come? What do you like about here, and under what circumstances would you go back?

My dad’s wife loved the US but chose to move back after his death to be closer to her kids.
My grandmother emigrated from Quebec and was happy to do so.

May I ask who the politically dissatisfied are that actually moved back?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL Alec Baldwin’s still here… lol

Not quite answering your question but I am a Canadian who wouldn’t move to the states for a boatload of cash, I much prefer it up here, even though the cost of living is higher up here.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 haha, wonder why none of them will move back after making such a big deal about it? Weird.

A lot of seniors enjoy a milder climate the southern states offer, compared to the harsh winters middle and eastern Canada usually get.
Plus a cheaper cost of living, but I wonder how cheaper when they have to buy expensive health care insurance to cover them while they are down there.

Smashley's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 – if they’re 65, health care is free.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Even if they are not US citizens??^^^

Smashley's avatar

Yup. Just like Canada. You just need to be a legal resident.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I did not know that, but I still don’t want to live down there.

No, I love America.

Edit: Canada was a great place to grow up and be a teenager. I never worried about any danger at night and always felt safe. I enjoyed my time there, minus my time in public school. But I do feel more free in certain ways in America.

@SQUEEKY2 Have you ever been here?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

YES, I have, as a child our family traveled across all the northern states, I have some relatives in upstate New York and have visited them.
Also before 911 I trucked all over Washington state.
And @ihavereturned except for some restricted firearm laws how do you feel more free in the states?
Not trying to start an argument just wondering?

Free over 65 health care in the U.S. is minimal and only a few providers will accept new patients.

Smashley's avatar

@YARNLADY – Important for everyone to remember, Thanks!

@ihavereturned – I’ll always appreciate the quality of education I got in Canada, though I agree that public school was still rough. Especially for a diminutive weirdo raised by a single immigrant parent.

ihavereturned's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I’d say there are less restrictions on speech and business.

@Smashley I’m so happy to find someone who feels the same. Public school is horrible for people who aren’t average.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 Other than politics, do you enjoy it here? I’m curious how all of you compare the two, just curious.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Other than work I haven’t been in the states since I was a kid.
as for work and it was just Washington state I do feel safer in Canada.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 What makes you feel more safe in Canada? More police, less population or what?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Less population.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 Makes sense, thanks. I love the less populated middle here, too.
