Kirk Douglas is gone. What’s your favorite of his films?
Mine will always be Paths of Glory, even ahead of Spartacus.

Wasn’t he older than God?
Well, I haven’t seen them all.
Spartacus is pretty good.
I liked The War Wagon, or at least its concept, when I was about 7 years old, but I haven’t seen it since then.
The Fury was horrifying when I was about 10 years old, though his is not really the main character there.
The man made so many GREAT movies that I’m surprised at the sparse enthusiasm. How about 7 Days in May or Lonely are the Brave? Out of the Past? None of them ring any bells?
A lot of his movies were replayed over the years on “Turner Classic Movies” Tv channels.
He was still doing movies the latest in 2004.
See video link as it outlines movies that he was in.

I think naming a favorite one movie he was in is kind of like which one child you will put in a lifeboat.
He was more than his movie roles. He burned his brand into the hearts of millions, because he was more than a guy in movies. He was a presence.
I loved Spartacus, but not above everything he did. What stands out to me is how so many entertainers would do impressions of him. It was a massive love and respect which drove such behavior.
That is what ran through my mind when I heard the announcement of his passing.
Rest well, Mr. Douglas. You have that coming.
Ulysses and A Letter To Three Wives.
I used to love his films, but my heart hardened against him when I hear he brutally raped Natalie Wood.
I should let it go. We all fall short.
Where did he go?
Isn’t anyone looking for him?
The Light at the Edge of the World.
look it up, you know you wanna!
You never see that one anywhere over here. You would have thought it would get more juice since Yul Brenner co starred at the prime of his fame.
Got teary-eyed watching that prison scene in Spartacus with him and Jean Simmons. But it may have been mainly due to North’s magnificently bittersweet and heart-wrenching score.
Afraid I can only remember seeing two of his films both were beyond remarkable. No doubt masterpieces. The other was also with Kubrick, Paths of Glory.
For those interested in watching him portrayed in real life during that MacArthy period in Hollywood, Bryan Cranston was in a movie where he played a prolific screenwriter. Can’t recall the movie title…
I will add The Man From Snowy River.
Wasn’t he, in that Jules Verne movie, “1,000 leagues, under the sea?”
That’d be my favorite.
Yep 20,000 leagues “whale of a tale” as he sang in the movie.
Thanks Stan. I love that movie…
The first movie of his that I ever saw was Spartacus, so that is my favorite. I was only 10 at the time, but it left an impression on me. I’m sure he did some before that, but I don’t remember any of his earlier work. My intention is to stream some of hs earlier stuff to see what I think, but I’ve not had time to start that process just yet!!!
For all of you who haven’t seen it, I claim that Paths of Glory , Kubrick’s first major film among the top 20 movies ever. Right up there with the 3rd Man and Lawrence of Arabia. You owe it to yourselves to find it and check it out.
@stanleybmanly That was what I read the night he passed. That is #1 on my list of KD movies to watch. You are more than welcomed to hold nto yoour claim as there’s enough Kirk for BOTH of us!!!
Oh God! This is the first celebrity mentioned on Fluther that I personally know. He was actually the first person to introduce me to film-noir, through my favorite film Detective Story. I saw a lot of real-life struggle in his gritty performance of a fallen cop. The last time I checked, he was 90 years old. I don’t know if I should be happy that he managed to live for so long…
