In this 21st century, why can’t we have a machine that’s both laundry washer and dryer?

What other appliances in our homes can be redesigned to make doing house chores easier and quicker?

We do, her name is Beryl Bainbridge.
They had single machine washer/dryers when I was a boy back in the 50s. In the decades since no one has managed to devise anything that will both wash and dry as reliably, efficiently or economically as separate units of each.
The fancier the machine, the more likely something could go wrong with it. And when that happened, you couldn’t wash or dry and the replacement machine would be very heavy and expensive. And probably just as large as a separate washer and drier.
Plus, having water so near to that 220 volt drier could mean some nasty electrocutions!
@Inspired_2write That is a lot of money; but each decent single unit costs $900–1,000 each, so it’s not that far off for a combined machine!!!
We had a neighbor that had one in their garage in front of turquoise and white Nash Metropolitan in the 1950’s.
How many people actually have only one machine going at a time? When I get to the point of doing laundry I normally do three or four loads in one shot. Wash is done, stick in dryer, stick another load in wash, fold what just came out of dryer. And keep going. That is why I have a “laundry day”.

Add to that it does not need venting as a regular dryer requires.
