Has your color preference changed with age?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) February 10th, 2020

I’ve just read that as people mature they prefer color of shorter wavelength (blue, green, violet) rather than colors of longer wavelength (red, orange, yellow).
Is this true for you?
Here is something to listen to while you think about it.

Not that I’ve noticed.
I’ve always liked blue, yellow & purple & have always loathed green!

I have always preferred black.
You know what they say. Once you go black…

@ucme

I dislike “Lime green” ( light color of green) due to the memories of having “lime green tweed sofa and chair’ that we had when married. I suppose it reminds me of all of the painful memories during that time, so I avoid it.

However I love ”“Forest Green”.

I used to like my “Bright Yellow” hiking jacket but gave it to the thrift shop as now I like greens.blue, purple mix.( I suppose its indicative of Spiritual meanings?)

I wore the Bright Yellow jacket everywhere and thinking back on it I realize that was what was in style then and also it conveyed a brighter future for me , as I had just moved from not a very good place. It was a start again for me.

No change that I’ve noticed, but according to the grandsons, my perception of colors has changed. I might get back to normal after cataract surgery next month.

I have always loved navy blue. Pale yellow is my favorite light color. And together…..perfection!

I went from purple to lavender for a favorite. I never liked green except olive green.
I like orange a lot, more than I used to.

Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,
Red Gold and Green

(I also like Purple and White, but never really liked blue or orange).

Funny, yes I have changed. There is color in my closet but not much bright color. One blouse is magenta, teal and red verticals but all subdued. I never noticed that.

I’ve always sort of liked olive drab or black
Sorry…

Somewhat. I wore a lot of black when I was younger, and now I’ve added more Navy. I think it has more to do with black being a little harsh as we age against our face, and also hair color.

My husband and I always had green in our houses, but now I’m liking blue too. I originally attributed it to being raised in a blue house with lots of blue clothing. My dad can see blue (he’s colorblind red green) so I think he favors blue because he can see it. Plus, my entire nuclear family is blue-eyed, and so blue also looks good on all of us. My husband and I laugh that both my parents wear a blue shirt about 80% of the time. Medium blue to navy.

I also really like brown. I always have and probably always will. Darker browns. That has stayed consistent.

I had an orange and brown room ages 11 to 15 ish. I picked it. Then in my mid teens I picked out white furniture and my sheets and duvet were stark white, and the throw pillows were huge, solids, blue, purple, orange. I actually want to go back to all white.

One thing that is also consistent for me is the hue I like best. It’s darker than a pastel, but not as intense as a prime color. I like Haitian art colors, but not against the black background, maybe that’s more of just a general Caribbean color thing?

Ok, I like almost everything. Lol. Just not pink. I’ve never been fond of pink. Funny enough my husband is the same. Especially, he comments on heavy blonde women who wear pink. He can’t help but see Miss Piggy. That sounds awful. He doesn’t say anything about women’s weight otherwise, it’s just that combination.

@JLeslie -My sister is blue eyed and does wear a lot of blue.
Mine are brown and I rarely wear anything that color as I look like a corpse.lol
I’ve always liked deeper colors. Neon is revolting.

Oh, I’m into shiny now too; shiny and sparkly; both in furnishings and clothing. That’s a shift for me. I was very matte previously, but now I like metallic and mixed metals, and I love white with gold or silver, and also very into charcoal grey or navy with gold. That’s en vogue now I guess. The mix of cool colors and warm metals. I have shoes with crystals on them and t-shirts too. It’s fun. I still like a sophisticated matte look though.

Like I said, I like almost everything.

Since I started drawing frequently I have stopped having specific reference for one color. Drawing requires me to use color together. So one color may look great in one picture but horrible in another. I think your color preference can change when you have more experience with colors in general.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Mimishu1995 -Interesting viewpoint.
My favorite color has always been red but I don’t show a preference for it currently in my paintings or pottery. Not for a long time, anyway.

What about pink?
It’s not even on the spectrum!

I like a lot of different colors, just not necessarily for my living environment or my clothing.

In my closet are a lot of teals, black and grays.

On Instagram, I follow a lot of decorating pages and I like a lot of white and light gray palettes, and I also have a few that are very colorful interiors which I like also. I don’t think I would do my house like that, but I enjoy looking at them.

I like various shades of purple and I like a lot of different shades of green. I like cranberry red. Last time I went furniture shopping, I’m seeing a lot of cranberry red. Maybe it’s going to take over teal as the new trendy color.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@jca2 -I have a lot of red clothing but my house itself doesn’t have much red in it.
I have a cranberry red lipstick. I like that color very much.

snowberry's avatar

I like very bright colors. When I was a child I hated pink, but I think I associated pink with having to “act like a lady” when it was far more fun to climb trees, play in the mud, go camping, etc.

nightwolf5's avatar

No, Blue has always been my favorite color, as well as my eye color, all of my life.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Color has never been an issue for me.
