If polled, what do you think would be the percentage of white American voters who would prefer to have a President who is white?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29229points) February 11th, 2020

1. Percentage of same voters who would vote for only white candidates as President?

2. Percentage of same voters who merely prefers but will also vote for non-white Presidential candidates?

Just a wild guess, obviously.

1. 15%
2. 42%

I hope you have percentages from a real poll at the end of this.

Most sources will tell you that around 40% of white voters voted for Barack Obama in 2012.
That leaves 60% who chose not to.
So the question is what % of the 60 % simply preferred a white president.
You may never know.

On the other hand, what % of Black voters preferred to have a black president in 08 and 12?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@josie At least 30% of those had to be based on party alone. So at the most that leaves +/- 30% racial reason or Other, ie Anti Muslim, Birthers, WS/NN, etc…

I think well over 50% of white people will vote for a non-white President. Are you including white Hispanics as non-white? What about South and West Asia like candidates with a heritage from India or the Middle East? Are they non-white by your definition? Just curious. The willingness to vote for a person might change a little depending on what part of the world, but I still say most white people will vote for non-white candidates.

I think it has way more to do with political party, policy, and culture/assimilation than race.

Edit: I think most would assume Republicans would be less likely, but I think white Republicans easily would be willing to vote for Condoleezza Rice or Nikki Haley (are you counting Nikki as white?) and previously for Colin Powell, I don’t know about now.

^^A scientific poll asking questions covering American ( of different races) voters’ preference if any regarding the race of the Presidential candidate. Have a feeling Presidential campaign strategists and advisers always try to get that sort of polling.

I think those numbers are vastly smaller than y’all are guessing.

@AreYou Me, too.

@mazingerz88 If you think that’s done then maybe a google search will get you some results.

I think most people don’t even notice race if the person is well spoken with a typical middle of the road American accent and dialect (also known as a TV reporter accent) dresses in a way that conforms with middle America, and seems to have a brain in their head. That’s true for white, black, or purple. That requirement is put on white people too.

There have been many discussions on fluther about racism vs xenophobia and about assimilation and conformity. I think the conformity matters most, some say that’s xenophobic, but I’m just talking about the cliche “dressing for success.”

Speaking for myself, honesty, integrity and tenacity are more important than skin color. That said, I believe Obama poisoned the well.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@si3tech As far as increasing racism or in what way? I’ve heard many people saying the same thing.

si3tech's avatar

I think it is in the way that now it lessens the chance that however well suited blacks are, it will be an uphill climb to even be considered for the office. Ben Carson is a man I believe would be suited for the office. Statistics show USA is one of the least racist countries in our world.

JLeslie's avatar

@si3tech I disagree that Obama ruined it in that way. You don’t think Condi Rice would be received well as a presidential candidate, or Colin Powel? I mentioned them above. Ben Carson said so many things that bother me I can’t really speak to whether he could be president, because I don’t think he should be.
