Does coronavirus come from God? Is this divine retribution? Or is it a radio preacher trying to scare people?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33550points) March 1st, 2020

Heard this on a religious radio station. Wacko theory of the day. (I added some links for explanation)

1) Kavod כבוד is the Hebrew word for honor and respect. Depending on how it is used in a sentence (verb tense) it can also be pronounced “Kovid”, especially in Yiddish.

2) Covid-19 (coronavirus) is also pronounced “Kovid”.

Therefore (says the preacher on the radio), Coronavirus is a sign from god that his power is to be respected lest even worse things will happen.

Is this a preacher taking advantage of a fraught situation?

No, it is the truth.
People, in general, are very trustworthy, and rarely do they take advantage of others, or bad situations.
I’d put all my trust in a religious leader (or radio evangelist).
Fuck science.

Covid is a portmanteau of COrona VIrus Disease, so no. There is no linguistic relation between these to words.

No, that’s about as valid as Pat Robertson’s claim that Hurricane Katrina was punishment for Americans’ acceptance of homosexuality.

The “punishment from God” explanation seems to have no logic to it. It’s arbitrarily applied to arbitrary circumstances.

Pat Robertson.
Was he not gay himself?

It is a natural event that has happened over centuries based on human error or unhygienic practices.

The Radio Preacher is manipulating the public’s fears in order to enlarge his congregation
.( not a good sign of compassion but greed).

Anyone who will manipulate by spreading fear instead of helping is to be avoided.

These types come out of the woodwork to gain for themselves.( Sad, using Religion to do so).

Economic sanctions probably reduce a country’s ability to finance a proper defence against outbreaks. So in a way it is a countries fault.

VP Pence has the Rapture coming?

Most likely came from a lab…..Wuhan City has the only step 4 lab in China.

@Sagacious Not so ! ^^^^

Hoax

It looks like and acts like a virus known to be carried by bats! And Chinese will eat anything; that is why there are no seagulls or dogs in Hong Kong and other southern Chinese cities. Seems the virus maybe from the “bat and seagull” market.

It is a first hand demonstration of evolution. Covid19 evolved from an earlier virus that everyone had built immunity towards.

Naw. It’s a virus.
Viruses are really quite fascinating to research.

It’smighty tricky to respond to this on behalf of an omniscient, omnipotent omnibenevolent super being responsible for all creation but I pray that the answer is, umm… wait on… erm… geez… spose so.

As an aside, I’m in the ER at the moment. Nobody is masked, nobody is freaking out.

That guy always blames God’s supposed punishing tendencies.

I wonder what he preaches God wants us to do to stop these illnesses, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.? Should we help those less fortunate? Treat all living things with dignity including providing cattle and birds with well kept living areas so diseases are less likely to develop? Not pollute God’s creation—the earth, sky, water, and ourselves? Not be so focused on money and wealth, but rather treating others as we would want to be treated?

Corona viruses happen just like shit happens. There is no divine anything.

@Inspired_2write… mutations are NOT caused by human error or unhygenic practices. They’re part of the evolutionary process.
