I love seeing a plant, thrive. Something that I took/helped, became a big, healthy plant…

Mt Wondering Jew, is a great example. I started with a single sprig. I now have a couple flower beds, and they are growing into the ground, around them. This winter, took a harsh toll. But. They are doing well.

I also have started, with a few water ferns. Now, there is a forest of them, in my aquarium. Like 20, or so.

I have often found a flower, that was tipped over, and gave them a home, and care…

I also have a small palm tree. Or something. I found it in a parking lot. It was tipped over, and most of the soil, had spilled out. It’s now like, three trees. It just took addition some good soil, and watering it daily.

I like helping things, through hard times…

It’s very rewarding. My biggest advice, is to research the plant, and take advice from people who know what they’re doing.

@ucme -Sonny Bono got custody of Ike’s…. true story.

@MrGrimm888 -I like that. You must be in a hotter zone.
I’ve gardened for years but have to put veggies in containers as there will be a garage sitting on top of my veggie garden spot.lol
Veggies will be in containers. I wonder if zucchini will thrive? How big of a pot, if any?Bathtub?? ha ha
I like to start seedlings around April, so they’ll be good to go come May

LLL . Yes.I’m in Charleston, SC. It rarely gets, below 35° F…it happens. But, it’s typically super rare…..

Having observed local plants, fit a couple of decades, it hurts them but won’t usually kill the plant off, in a few days of “cold” weather, for fist a few hours in the span of a few days. Usually, it gets up into the 60’s-70’s, during the colder months…..

It’ll hurt our plant life, but not that bad…They’ll heal up, as our brief winter, gives way to spring…
Once in awhile, I’ll put handwarwmers, under them. That’s usually enough to keep them cozy, for a night or so…

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888 -Average low temp is -10 to -5 F so my perennial plants have to be able to take that.
The hand warmers are a great idea though.
Right now, I see daffodils poking through the ground. Crocus is probably there too but I didn’t look close enough. Tulips should be next.

In theory. Every spring I get excited about gardening. But end up with a little botanical graveyard by summer. Worst case of brown thumb ever.

@raum -I have gone that route as I have a rough time in the heat.
Sure, I could get up before sunrise to weed but I don’t want to.
I am looking through seed catalogs and am not overwhelmed at all with the choices ;)

raum's avatar

There’s a local nursery that sends out a catalogue with the cutest descriptions. I might spend more time looking over the catalogue than I spend actually gardening. Ha.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@raum -A friend sent me one that has beautiful photographs. It’s like a dream book for those that skip over words a lot.
I am going to get some seeds soon.I swear, I will take care of them from start to finish.

So much fun to look at!
I think you can order from them by mail. :)

raum's avatar

Just requested a catalogue.
I’m excited to get it. Thanks!

Sorry, plants.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@raum- You’re welcome
I like the search feature in the one you sent very much!
I will get dahlia seeds this weekend. I hope they’re in the stores but if not, I will order some.
There is such a variety of sizes, shapes and colors with those flowers. I love them
https://www.dahlias.com/ has everything but I will see what I can get at the store.

raum's avatar

Some of my dahlia tubers from like four years ago are starting to come back. Patting myself on the back for not totally killing those. Haha

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@raum -I have to dig mine up if I want them to live I need to try a dinner plate dahlia and prune it properly to get a giant flower.
I feel bad picking the side buds off but that is how I was told to do it.
There is also one with mini pom pon flowers that look like golf balls

raum's avatar

Just bought a bunch of seeds from them! Totally excited! Though I will most likely end up killing them if I somehow manage to germinate the seeds. Ha.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@raum -I started a bunch of flower seeds a few weeks ago.I soak the seeds overnight in a cup of water, then plant the next day.
They usually germinate quicker than what the packet says. I start them inside in cups or newspaper pots as it’s too cold out right now.
I should have a huge amount of dahlias.
My husband bought me some dinner plate dahlia tubers so I can experiment with getting a monster sized flower.
I also started some tomatoes and zucchini.
What did you get?

raum's avatar

Three kinds of tomatoes:
black beauty
green zebra
Brad’s atomic grape tomato

Two kinds of carrots:
black nebula
cosmic purple

One kind of beans:
dragon tongue bush bean

And some milkweed
for butterflies. :)

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@raum I’ll be by for some of those tomatoes. They look great!
I grew Black Russian & Cherokee purple tomatoes before and the flavor is outstanding.I bet your choices will be just as good.
The carrots are interesting. I’ve never tried to grow them.
I also did not know that milkweed has a vanilla fragrance.

raum's avatar

You’re using plural terms.
I’ll be giddy if I grow one!

I’m hoping to experiment with using the purple carrot as a natural dye.

Errrr…just noticed that it says the sap on the milkweed is poisonous if eaten in large quantities. Yikes! May pass on growing that one.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

The dye sounds nice. I’ve grown purple beans that lose their color when boiled. Is that how it’d work with the carrots?
Did not know that about milkweed but did know that the pods are good to smack people with.
:D

raum's avatar

I think you chop up and simmer the roots in water?

Ha! Now I’m imagining you running amok smacking people with milkweed pods.

@raum – That is how you can tell who your true friend is. XD
