Why do they have to be at least 35, but can be as old as God?
A minimum age assures a bit of maturity and life experience. There is no reason to have an age cap if the voters elect you.
It is part of the Constitution.
Good question.
I guess, and it’s a total guess, is that age doesn’t effect all people the same… Some people are sharp, and healthy, into their 90’s.
What age, does the OP think should be the cut off?
It really comes down to the voters. Would they elect, an 85 year old?...
Possibly because at the time the minimum age was set up, candidates seldom lived past 50 or maybe 60. When my grandpa turned 50, my dad took away all his chores because he was considered an old man who wasn’t going to live much longer. The reality turned out that he lived to be 95 and my dad did his work for almost ½ his life.
Although we in the US mess with a lot of things, but how our founding fathers set up our government seems to be respected by most
@SEKA The minimum age is in the constitution
^ Our founding fathers set up the Constitution. At the time it was unheard of for people to live into their 70’s or 80’s. 35–50 or 35–60 was not that big of a stretch. Doubt that they ever dreamed that anybody would be running for President at 80. The elderly were respected back then because they had wisdom and considered wise
@SEKA Good point. Also back then 35 was considered old rather than middle aged & you were assumed to be dead by 55 or 60. Living to 65 was special!!!
