Are Karen memes sexist?

Asked by Nuggetmunch (511points) March 5th, 2020

Some people believe it encourages the normalizing of female stereotypes. What is your opinion?

I love them. It’s tongue in cheek humor like Captain Obvious. To me it’s not sexist at all, just humor.

But the stereotype the name conjures — at least in the US — is limited mainly to white women in their mid-30s or 40s. The archetypal “Karen” is blonde, has multiple young kids, and is usually an anti-vaxxer. Karen has a “can I speak to the manager” haircut and a controlling, superior attitude to go along with it:
...................
In particular, the “Karen” has evolved into a figure known for her hypocrisy, rudeness toward working-class staff, and anti-science beliefs.

“A Karen divorces her husband and takes the kids, is a pseudoscientist/anti-vaxxer/flat-earther, an MLM participant, an avid user of Facebook to post shitty motivational posts/’Live Laugh Love,’ and more,“ karmacop97 explained to me. “Our Karen in the wild won’t satisfy all of [these attributes], but she can still be a true Karen.”

“She’s the mom in Kroger with her kids asking to speak to the manager,” one Karen, a 29-year-old law student from Oxford, Mississippi, told me in a phone interview. “You do see that basic stereotype sometimes, so it’s kind of funny. It’s a little bit of a commentary on white privilege, perhaps.”

Ahhh, got it. My cousin (actually named) Karen may find this funny/familiar.

When did she change her name from Betty?

@cookieman There’s a few of them now, like Cheryl (from she-shed fame), which references overly dramatic, demanding women who browbeat their husbands. Also my other favorite is Linda, the grandma trying to reason with her argumentative grandchild.

You know Sharon, right? Yes, that one (in fact, all ones). Well, she’s here, in your office, ready to annoy you. Along with Susan and Sandra she’s the most annoying colleague a person could have, but it’s Felicia you really wish would go away. Jan is a liar. Chad is an alpha male. Harold is too old to understand anything, and there’s only one word to describe Janet. “Whatever”.

Look up what a “Kyle” is

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SergeantQueen haha, yeah, the TidePod eaters. I don’t use that one as much as Karen, just around more Karen’s here in Trumpville.

Kyle is an online caricature of a white boy referenced as an antagonistic character in memes. Similar to how Karen is used online, “Kyle” jokes parody of a certain kind of person with a set of characteristics one associates with the name; in “Kyle’s” case, these are characteristics of an angry white male teenager. “Kyle” is generally presented as rage-filled and aggressive, and he is a fan of Monster Energy Drinks and Axe body spray, which has been documented in the Kyle Punches Drywall meme.

^^ Yeah my point in bringing that up is that it isn’t a “sexist” meme because
1) It isn’t stereotyping the entire gender, just a certain subset of that gender and
2) Because it isn’t just a joke limited to men or women only, they have jokes about both genders.

I think it’s basically the white uptight mom equivalent of “Ok boomer”. It’s hilarious because we all know people who fit the bill, especially those of us who’ve worked in customer service.

I love memes because you can’t fight them with anger and outrage. People who get outraged at memes just become memes themselves.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Demosthenes Here’s a funny ‘Okay Boomer’ video. Many older people find it offensive not funny.
