My mother (95 years old) has consistently maintained that “elderly” is ten years older than she is. She is probably horrified that her youngest child is on Medicare.
Chuck Norris is 80.
I believe it’s a state of mind.
yeah, I’ll go with that
I used to think of it as 60 but I know people who are 60 and don’t seem elderly.
I’d say 70 and older.
I’m 53. I’ll be 54 tomorrow.
When I was little, people in their 50’s seemed old. They looked older then than they look now. I just found out recently that Carroll O’Connor was 49 when he started playing Archie Bunker. I didn’t believe it so I googled it and it’s true. When you look at Archie Bunker, he looked old. Edith looked old. Now, in the area I live in, women who are in their 50’s and 60’s look young until they’re old. I specify “in the area I live in” because when I go to other parts of the country, women look more dowdy when they’re older.
Happy almost birthday on Friday the 13th.
I agree that when I was young, people in their 50’s looked old. My brother and I were looking at old pictures from when we were kids. My grand parents had to have been in their 50’s but looked to be close to 80. I think hair style and clothing had a lot to do with it.
Anyone twenty odd years older than me.
Eh, 70–75+ a tiny bit of nuance because some people can hit 70 and still be quite spry, once people are getting into their 70s there seems to be a significant shift, though.
Anyone at an age where they can no longer fully take care of themself.
For everyone, this happens at different ages. Some at 72, some not till they’re 90.
Now that my parents are over 60, I find it odd to consider them “elderly” or “seniors” and I’m moving the cutoff to 70 for the time being.
By definition anyone who is aging is elderly so I guess we all are.
Personally, I consider 65 or older to be elderly.
The closer I get to getting old, the further I make the age of elderly in my head.
I’m 53, look & feel younger & am the happiest I’ve ever been.
That is saying something too because I’ve always been a happy person with a positive outlook.
Elderly is a state of mind, nowt else!
70 and up.
Although, from a medical standpoint 60 and up.
When you’re described as “spry” if you’re agile and in good health.
I feel “elderly” is a word describing a way of thinking about a way of being. It’s not directly about time.
My dad always said it was anybody older than he was, He said that from the time he turned 60 until just before he died at 89. So, for me, it’s anybody older than me!!!
I was at my all time strongest at age 35 (finished a 26.2 mile marathon in 2:36:10 or averaged sub 6 minute miles). Been going slowly down hill ever since. I’m 69 now and work my body hard every day. Go ahead call me elderly but I bet that I can do more chin-ups than you. HA!
I think that elderly people are those people (age is not a factor) who never exercise and let themselves go. They abuse their bodies by becoming obese, drink alcohol, use tobacco and other recreational drugs. I’ve seen some sad elderly folks far younger than me.
Good health!
