How do you feel about the leadership in your country or state or province, right now, with respect to covid-19 response?

Asked by Jeruba (56106points) March 25th, 2020

Please mention the country or area you are speaking from. (That’s a suggestion, not a requirement.)

When it’s a matter of survival, it goes beyond politics. It’s essential to treat the situation, not exploit it. Some people see that.

I think we are doing everything necessary and I fully support the stay home order.

USA: The leadership is moronic and evil and selfishly making it about themselves, self-promotion (e.g. appointing itself and the president’s unqualified son-in-law to management positions, criticizing others), idiocy , incoherence , focusing on corporate giveaways, etc. The people under the national leadership (agencies and state leadership) are doing a better job.

BC Canada our provincial government is doing a fair job at keeping people updated.

Based on my gut, and the little knowledge and understanding I have for and about statistics, psychology, and medical questions, I want to say I’m pretty pleased and grateful for the level-headed response and crisis-management my government, and the opposition, and the health institutes are bringing us.
I hope I won’t be disappointed in a few months, in them, and in their and my own judgement.

My only criticism is that we had warning so I don’t understand the delay in closing borders and issuing the travel orders, and instituting the quarantine earlier.

China was in lockdown in January 2020 so weren’t all OUR deaths preventable if someone would have taken decisive action here?

@Inspired_2write Wow, ours is 8.3 billion. Interesting.

Yes there was a sticker that bothered a lot of us but that idea was changed.
“At least three parts of the bill were removed or amended — notably, the sections that granted the government unlimited tax-and-spend powers until the end of 2021.(!!!!! too much power!)

As written, the bill now grants the government unlimited spending power until June 2020.

Financial support package for the first three months, for companies, workers, and independents, is 10 to 20 billion euro.
Expected to grow over the rest of the year.

Kansas. Gov Kelley shut all school buildings until the end of the year. I think she did the right thing.
No reported positive cases for my county yet, though. That doesn’t mean much, though, as someone could have a really mild case that they don’t go to the doctor for so they never get tested.

Thay aren’t testing everyone you either have to been exposed to someone that has had it or be very sick yourself .and that is up here.

NY. I’ve been impressed with the way Cuomo has been handling the press conferences and the crisis. Lots of people that I know are saying they would vote for him if he ran for President. Not that everything he has done was something I approved of, but for this, it’s been good.

Trump, four days ago he said everyone needs to stay home. Two days ago he said America needs to get back to work. Make up your mind. Which one is it?

Boris is doing the best he can with the shitstorm he’s been dealt with.
Could have acted sooner, kind of wasted a fortnight prancing around.

Germany.

I’m happy with Merkel, though I’m not a supporter of her party. She’s been good at handling difficult times in general, and I’m quite impressed this time around. Some are saying she hasn’t been doing enough, and I guess we’ll see if that’s true. However, she’s been clear and honest, very serious and gently optimistic. No sudden changes. She’s fully supported science and the facts, which she always does. Instead of wielding her full power, she’s tried to achieve the necessary social distancing by appealing to everyone’s sense of responsibility. She’s said that we’ll go on lockdown if other measures fail to have the desired effect, but it’s easy to see she balks at further restricting people’s movements.

That said, we are not experiencing the brunt of it yet. We have only a thousand people in intensive care for Covid-19, which leaves 27,000 free beds. Experts are saying that in a few weeks, beds will be scarce. It’s a race against time, setting up the necessary beds and equipment.

My city is now examining every single person from the border before they can get a pass. Military bases are being used as quarantine areas. Planes are no longer allowed to enter the city. And there is a meme floating around the Internet saying “real patriots don’t go outside”.

I think the government is doing a great job at maintaining the outbreak and related things. Once upon a time the Internet was full of fake news and stuff, and now everyone is tunning in on TV for the latest news instead of listening to conspiracy theorists on FB. At least talking shit about the government is out of fashion these days.
