Have you heard that Trump wants to send troops to the Canadian border?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23474points) March 26th, 2020

The news report says he is worried about Covid19 ,and wants them to monitor border activity.
What a waste of money in this stressful time, I can say you have nothing to worry about Canadians sneaking across the border right now, I think it would be the other way around, the US has the highest infection rate in the world right now.
Oh and here is the link to that news story….

He has no fucking idea what to do so he’s just blathering. As usual.

Saw him talking to Fox news and was saying if the states isn’t up and running by Easter with packed churches people would start commiting mass suicides, and his approval rating has gone up to 55% for how he is handling this crisis.

I love the irony of Trump thinking that Canadians want to emigrate to the Coronvirus epicenter of the western hemisphere.

According to the source I linked, Mexico has 475 confirmed cases, whereas the US has 86,004.

That gives Mexico an infection rate of about .000375%.

It gives the US a rate of about .026%, which is about 70 times greater than Mexico’s.

Actually it was reported on Sunday am political shows that they are seeing more illegal crossings at our northern border. They did not say they were Canadians.
Frankly I have never had a problem with secure borders.

I’d rather them at borders right now than conducting raids if that is the same group of people. I doubt the Canadian border is a big problem right now though. People do try to come in through Canada, it isn’t unheard of, but right now Canada is probably a safer place to be.

Why are so many countries closing their borders? In general, people should travel as little as possible to cut down on their chances of encountering someone with the virus, but what difference does it make if someone living near the border crosses over it?

@LostInParadise “In general, people should travel as little as possible to cut down on their chances of encountering someone with the virus”
5 million left Wuhan right after the start of the pandemic.
Article is from beginning of February.

Perhaps to keep the troops busy?

Nobody knows what goes on in his head at any point.

Lets see now he wants a wall between Mexico and the U.S. and he is planting that idea between Canada and the U.S.!

He in effect is boxing in the U.S. citizen from leaving the U.S. permanently.

He ruined communications with China, North Korea and now Canada?

Nobody will trust the U.S. for its word is not worth the paper its written on.

The story was true, but the proposal was dropped.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

I have yet to see that where I’m at.I haven’t seen my Canadian neighbors in a few weeks

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Why was it even proposed in the first place @Yellowdog ?

Yellowdog's avatar

I don’t know. The U.S. certainly has more COVID cases than Canada, probably 10x more. And Canada’s borders are more closed down than the U.S. so its not like others are coming through Canada.

this is what I found Canada as of March 27 has 4,016 confirmed cases with 25 deaths and as of this date has tested 164,564 people.

The US 104,486 confirmed cases with 1661 deaths, and I couldn’t find how many have been tested to this date.
The states doesn’t have 10x more it’s like over 40x more, this is getting scary.
Maybe we do need your military at our border to protect Canadians.

Yellowdog's avatar

That’s what I’d expect. With Canada’s tight borders, less density in most of its population areas, and less travel from foreign places. I’d think Canada ought to be securing its borders with the States.

He said in one of his press conferences that it was about checking for steel.
He told reporters that some country under embargo was trying to transport their steel through Canada into the US.
We had already reached an agreement with Canada to stop crossings in both directions across the border except for transporting goods.
