What makes GM or Ford expert in making medical ventilators?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33577points) March 27th, 2020

Sure, they make cars and pickup trucks.

But Emperor Trump is commanding that they make ventilators and respirators.

1) do they have patent permission to make these? What plans are they using?

2) Do they have the parts (motor, fan, regulator, etc.) to build these?

3) Do they have the very-small-device expertise?

In short, how to the car companies have any expertise in assembling medical equipment?

Or is this federal bloviation once again?

They have the infrastructure in place to manufacture the needed parts required with little tooling up, compared to any other possible manufacturer.

They aren’t experts in making ventilators. They just need to be experts in making a product to specifications. I assume they will have some experienced people there to train and supervise tough.

I’ll email this q to my favorite brother who may or may not answer.
He’s an engineer at one of the big three.

Automakers built bombers and boats and torpedoes tanks and everything else imaginable in World War II. Remington Typewriter made rifles and pistols.

Car companies have said they are working with existing ventilator companies. The car companies have facilities and expertise in producing on a much bigger scale.

Detroit Free Press – March 27, 2020 - ”...Last Friday, GM announced it was partnering with medical device company Ventec Life Systems to speed up production of ventilators as coronavirus proliferates across the nation.

”...Earlier this week, Ford said it will join the effort to “speed production” of respirators by collaborating with 3M to manufacture “Powered Air-Purifying Respirators.” The two are working on a “new design leveraging parts from both companies,” a statement said”

What the auto makers have is scale. There is a massive shortage of respirators and the remedy is mass production. The auto plants are the logical solution because they are set up to deal with the massive stockpiling snd sorting of parts They also are already set up to ship, receive, warehouse products and the parts to assemble them. The rail lines, rail cars and crews are in place and ready, and the routines for massive shipments are already established and understood.

They don’t use the assembly lines that car are put on but the sub-assembly areas; like fuel pumps. air condition and plastic interiors.

They stepped up voluntarily to the task themselves, as have many, joining in the effort. There was no dictatorial ‘command’ by any ‘emperor’

^Very true! As a matter of fact, trump downplays the need for ventilators. “I don’t believe you need 30,000 to 40,000 ventilators,” said trump.

They’re not the only ones Mercedes Honda Renault all the F1 teams are on board with this.

@chyna I think he believes that only Dem’s will get the COVID-19 and the “Grim Reaper” therefore only take Dem’s. He’ll get it later. When someone explains it to him in sentences with simple words.

Trump never said that, @chyna Trump commissioned 40,000 ventilators, four new hospitals and a navy ship hospital for New York.

What kind of evil tyrant who would do that!

Friday March 27, 2020 – President Trump on Friday used the Defense Production Act to compel General Motors (GM) to produce ventilators to combat the coronavirus after days of hesitating to use the powers in the law..”

Trump never said that, @chyna

You’re really teeing up the easy ones today.

The American Conservative – March 27, 2020 – “Tonight on Sean Hannity’s show, President Trump said (just past the 25:40 point) that people are exaggerating the number of ventilators needed in this crisis. “I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators,” said the president.”

It says, “Page not found 404”

I believe you, if it’s The Hill you are citing. I DO know that over 30 major companies have volunteered their production lines and workers—evidently GM wasn’t one of them.

So is that an apology to me for calling me a liar @Yellowdog?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

I talked to my brother.
I can’t repeat what he said in it’s entirety not even close lol
The team where he is at that is working on it is called “Apollo” and yeah, they are fully capable of building these things.

We’ll take what we can get.

Could this have anything to do with the fact that Biden was on Jimmy Kimmel Thursday night saying that trump has been negligent in calling up the Defense Production Act and if Biden was president that he would have kicked in the DPA weeks ago so there wouldn’t have been a shortage of ventilators?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SEKA -The DPA is why my husband didn’t get laid off weeks ago.

mazingerz88's avatar

While at it, Ford and GM could also easily build a new car called The Ventilator. The Respirator?

Yellowdog's avatar

@chyna Yes, that is an apology from me/

I am just now catching up with what has happened in New York.

elbanditoroso's avatar

Will a GM ventilator come with a V6 and V8 option? It goes without saying that it would have air conditioning.

SEKA's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille That’s interest considering trump didn’t invoke it until Friday. I’m glad it saved somebody’s job

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SEKA -My point is that he is still working when others were being laid off 2 weeks ago,as he is an essential worker.

SEKA's avatar

^ I was serious when I said I’m glad somebody got to keep their job. All I’ve heard lately is about peeps losing their jobs and going hungry and people dying. Your hub’s job is a breath of fresh air for me :)

@lucillelucillelucille Give him a kiss and a hug from me as my thanks in return
