Is anyone tax savvy enough to tell me what will happen with this mess? (See details.)
Long story short, Rick ended up paying over $2,300 in state income tax…... to the state of Missouri! Most of you know we don’t live in Missouri. We live in Kansas. Rick’s employer is based in Missouri, though. It has to be a payroll error.
We dropped our tax info off with Bob, our tax guy at H&R Block. Well, today he calls me and tells me Rick paid 0 in income tax to the state of Kansas, so we owe the state $1,900. Needless to say, I was hot! For further details PM me.
So. How does this work?

Not well my wife works from home her company’s East coast office is in another state !
Yep we end up with taxes for both states and Uncle Smoke.
Duh. I googled it. It’s a quick fix
Willie…have you run your situation past a tax accountant? It doesn’t sound right that you pay taxes in 2 states. You should only pay tax in the state.you reside in.
Yes but we only pay for her income in the State she earned it in. but we end up paying in both !
New York state used to claim all moneys made out of state were taxable, we used to do craft shows in New England and NEW YORK. New York sent us a notice they were taxing our income from ALL revenue and money we made from 5 day a week jobs. Our CPA and his law staff sent them a short note. Not going to happen!!
Yes we pay in two states because she makes money in two states the amount in the other state is all we pay for in the other state but we’ve had discussions with each state
I strongly feel you should talk to an account about your current situation.
We have and we only pay for the amount of her income in the other state for the taxes from there, we both have other incomes that are only taxed in our resident state.
It’s all fixed and approved and we should get our returns in a few days.
