What plant did the native Americans use in the peace pipe?

Was it tobacco, or marijuana, or something else?

According to this article, it was usually tobacco with some herbs thrown in. The article says that the smoke was not inhaled. This article says that marijuana did not cross the Mexican border until the early 1900’s.
