Why Isn't cable television showing the good stuff?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) April 14th, 2020

Seeing most of use are social distancing? I would like more shows other than Covid19 news?

I don’t get the good channels (HBO’s Bill Maher ) , and maybe I should order it?

What is your television experience? Did you find the good stuff? Or is all off your programming crap?

I haven’t had Cable in about 3 years. I stream and use free things like Pluto TV, I also have Disney+n Philo, Access to Hulu and Netflix. Cable is expensive and hasn’t been good to me in ages. These streaming services are cheaper and you watch when you want, you aren’t on a TV schedule of what times things come on.

Everyone likes different things, so it all depends what is good to you. If you like what HBO plays then yeah, it’s up to you. I try not to watch much news, since most of it is depressing.

@nightwolf5 I will buy HBO now. Thanks. I have a $350 credit.

The latest fad is subscription streaming, so cable and broadcast are trying to cash in.

We have Showtime and Epix for free on cable until nest month.

My cable is crap!!! Fortunately for me, my TV is a smart TV with ROKU built in so I’ve been streaming a lot of movies. That way I get to choose my movies by my mood of the day. I’ve also had my Echo streaming Blues constantly. I get tired of watching TV & the music is a pleasant change of pace!!!

While cutting my grass I stream Pandora through my phone. It seems to make my time working pass faster!!!

Yes, I have a ROKU box hooked up to my TV, it has great apps and things to watch. Many for free, but lots you can subscribe to as well.

I’m an Amazon baby & a Prime member so I get to watch many movies for free or under $5.99. I find it emotionally beneficial to watch old movies that brings back good memories from happy times in my life. I also have Netflix which costs me $8.99/month & their movies are free to watch the rest of the month. That’s cheaper than going to a movie theater…my popcorn doesn’t cost $5.00/tub & my Coke isn’t another $5.00 either!!!

Project Blue Book on The History Channel is really good.

AMC has Better Call Saul.

I am in the middle of Ozark on Amazon Prime. Last week I watched a four part series called Unorthodox, the story of a Hasidic woman that leaves her community in Brooklyn. Very well done, fascinating.

Update: I ordered some extra channels. I was lucky enough to order HBO canada and found Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Loved it.

RDG You’ve gotta start streaming. Dump the cable and save a fortune.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@stanleybmanly What is streaming? How do I start? Netflix and Crave I just ordered fron my isp. I have a tv in my bedroom and my living room, a desktop computer and a smartphone. My laptop is fried and desposed of.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Anything obtained through the internet. NETFLIX- you’re on your way. Before you know it, you’ll understand what a comparative ripoff the cable actually is.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@stanleybmanly The funny part is I ordered Netflix and crave, through my cable provider. My $350 credit is non-refundable. I might cancel my extra cable channels and maybe the whole package in two months.
My cable is $106 a month.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@stanleybmanly I am on my sisters Apple plus tv. I am limited to the free content to save her money.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Apple plus! Will Roku work where you are?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Will try to keep some form of entertainment. Lest I get cabin fever.

It’s a little black box you buy at Wal-Mart. I think ours was $70. You get a lot of channels, including YouTube. YouTube alone opens up the WORLD!
It runs on Wi-Fi.

LadyMarissa's avatar

Amazon carries them too!!! They now have a Roku stick that you plug into the USB port on the TV. So, you can unplug it from your TV & take it with you to a friend’s house. You must have WiFi in order to receive anything. What you receive is dependent on how much you’re willing to spend. Netflix & Hulu both charge just under $10/month for unlimited watching. I like Hulu especially for over the air TV shows. IF you miss watching one or get interrupted, you can go on Hulu the next day & watch it to see what you missed. Netflix is into making their own original programming right now & that doesn’t excite me much. Since I enjoy revisiting some of the good old movies from my life, Netflix is good for those. HBO has their own channel. I don’t know how much they charge, but they are more into the newer movies & some of their own originals. That doesn’t excite me, so I’ve never tried them on Roku although I used to have them on cable & I seldom turned to watch them. I love old cartoons like Looney Toons, Betty Boop, & the like. I have one channel that only charges $2.00/year for most of the good old stuff including Felix the Cat. I don’t watch it often, but it only costs about 10 cents a month so I’m not out of much IF I don’t watch that month!!! Many of the truly free channels do have advertisements, but they last less than 30 seconds but are often grouped in sets of 3, so you get less than 90 seconds in place of 10–15 minutes worth of commercials. When my life is busy, I can go several months without watching anything off Roku. I do often watch a lot on Friday night or Saturday & maybe Sunday. When I first got it, i binge watched the entire 9 years of Murder She Wrote & I also binge watched all the Criminal Minds. I love binge watching TV series because I don’t have to wait a whole week to see what is happening next & I don’t forget what happened last week either. During the stay at home, my Roku has become more important than ever before because when the cabin fever sets in I can watch something that takes me to a happier place!!! Just remember that you MUST have WiFi in order for it to work!!!

Cable tv also has It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and What We Do In The Shadows.

There are many good shows to find.

Depends on what you consider “the good stuff”. But, I wouldn’t really know what’s current. I haven’t had cable service since 2005. Any viewing I do is via streaming services. I currently keep subscriptions to Netflix and Amazon Prime.

(As an aside: if you do ever get a subscription to Amazon Prime, do yourself a favor – look up The Expanse. Thank me later.)

stanleybmanly's avatar

The expanse is terrific. City on a Hill was great and I liked The Bureau though the subtitles flash by too quickly.

LadyMarissa's avatar

I just added The Expanse to my watch list…I’ll thank you later!!!

Update I cancelled my cable a few months back. I used the savings to buy some clothes and food, and more books from Amazon.

zenvelo's avatar

Watched the new Cumberbatch movie on Netflix last night, “The Power of the Dog”. Good movie, incredible photography.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Update I listen to radio, free antenna channels on tv, and I watch YouTube with unlimited internet. Also I take free French lessons through Duolingo from 3 -30 minutes a day.
