How do you wash your store bought produce?

Asked by nightwolf5 (2958points) April 17th, 2020

I generally rinse my fruits and vegetable under warm water before consuming. Though in the time of this virus, what in your opinion should we do before eating them? Any certain wash you use?

I only wash my berries. Or fruit and veggies where I eat the skin. Wih warm water. To not hurt my sensitive teeth.

I only get the veggies that are already packaged in something. So I know that they haven’t been touched by everyone in the grocery store. Warm water works for me.

Normally just warm water.

These days, we throw all the produce from one grocery trip into one drawer and quarantine for 72 hours before using.

(Do NOT use disinfectant on produce.)

I use citric acid. It’s on the CDC list of substances capable of killing the novel coronavirus, and because most people aren’t familiar with it, it’s still readily available. It’s non-toxic (I use it to make lemonade), smells nice, and is reasonably cheap. Even with price-gouging, I just bought a 10 pound bag of it from Amazon for $40. A 2.5% solution of citric acid in ordinary tapwater will kill the novel coronavirus and it’s perfectly safe to use on food.

If you can’t or don’t want to order it from Amazon, you can usually find it at farming supply stores (where rural people with wells use it as a water softener) or at wine/beer brewing stores (where it’s used as a pH balancer).

Thanks for all the good responses. Never used Dettol before. But looking it up read it’s not to be ingested. I found one at the grocery store yesterday called Fit Organic fruit and vegetable wash. It was $6.00. Maybe try that too? My dad says he just runs his under warm tap water. Hmm.
