Did I just invent a new coffee flavor?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43867points) April 21st, 2020

I put a spoonful of Carnation Malted Milk powder in my coffee and it was… Delicious! Checking the ingredients I see it is mostly wheat flour, milk, and about 5 grams of sugar. No wonder it tasted so good.
Would you try it?

I would, I have actually tried something like it. A little malted barley extract (for beer making) in coffee is amazing.

Carnation is made by Nestle. I have boycotted Nestle for the last 30 years because they kill babies. Nestle bribes doctors in the developing world to give samples of baby formula to new mothers. These samples are precisely made to last just long enough for the mother’s breasts to dry up, at which point she must buy more formula or her baby dies. If she has no access to clean water, or if she cuts the recommend formulation to save money, the baby is also more likely to die.

The World Health Organization says this marketing tactic is responsible for the death of as many as 1.5 million babies every single year. And Nestle has been doing this for decades despite being repeatedly censured for it. If you want the full details, you can find all the documentation at Baby Milk Action.

But no, I’m sorry to tell you that you haven’t invented a new type of coffee. Super-cheap dollar store instant coffee, for example, usually referred to as a “coffee blend,” is usually made with a combination of instant coffee, chickory, and a grain like barley or wheat.

I have been supplementing my powdered milk (yuk) in my coffee with coconut milk and also have achieved an odd “yummy” effect. At this point I am delighted to find whatever interesting and tasty substitute!
Good for you, @LuckyGuy, for being willing to experiment.

I’d add some peanut powder as well, for the peanut-butter taste. But you’re on the right track.

I have tried an alternative version – Ovaltine in my coffee. I agree it can be yummy.

Sounds delicious. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I can see that combination working very well. Maybe I’ll buy it for my husband. I love coffee desserts, so I do appreciate the coffee flavor.

I certainly would try it. There’s really nothing that’s better than coffee.

@zenvelo I used to do that too when I was in college. It was a happy accident.

I think I’d just drink some Ovaltine instead.

Instant cocoa in my coffee is what I always indulge in. Similar, I suppose… so, yes, I’d try it.
