What high fiber foods are you eating, are you drinking carbonated beverages ?

15 lbs. is quite a bit of weight gain for gas and bloating. I would expect maybe a 5–8 lb. gain. I know it’s bad timing with everything being closed, but you might want to talk to your doctor about this and any other issues that might be contributing to the gain. Lots of medical issues could cause this that none of us could know.

no I don’t really drink carbonated beverages.I eat yogurt and drink meal replacements.

@honeybun35 Are you eating too many honey buns? In university I was short on cash and got a prescription for replacement drinks. I got sick. They where free so I kept it up. Untill I got very sick. Then I added some meat and potatoes to my diet and life improved.
I recommend consulting a physician before starting any fad diets/ exercise programs. You can also consult a dietitian/ nutritionist for help on having healthy eating habits.

As a teenager I had gas and bloating. I ended up in the emergency department for a week in the hospital twice a year.

Part two:
I watched a television commercial on Total cereal, when I was a teenager. Where it said that you need 16 bowls of rasin bran cereal to equal one bowl of Total cereal. So I did , and I ended up in the hospital for a week.
Lesson is:
Discussion with a doctor about any thing weird is essential. It would have saved me grief and pain and the health care system money for admitting me for a week in hospital if only I had told my doctor what my idea of eating 16 bowls of Total cereal. He would have said no and it would have ended then and there.

Yogurt and meal replacements? Maybe you have some type of food allergy to them? Maybe to milk or to the protein powder? Or to gluten?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@jca2 Or @honeybun35 Is just eating yogurt and meal replacements?
@honeybun35 Are you eating more than yogurt and meal replacements? Too much of any one type of food can make you sick. I would ask a doctor or pharmacist about trying an over the counter pill for lactose intolerance , or allergy meds for being allergic to dairy.
Too much dairy makes me have painfull gas and bloating. Sometimes the pain is so bad that I will lay on the bathroom floor begging God for a fart.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by bloating. 20 pounds isn’t usually just gas and water retention.

Are your ankles swollen?

If you’re constipated try eating a small palm full of raisins or two prunes once a day and a glass of water.

You can try slightly reducing your salt intake if you usually eat a lot of salt.

Is your blood pressure high?

Don’t do anything too extreme.

Try eating healthier in case some of it is just weight gain.

If simple measures don’t make you feel better I’d consider being examined. If your ankles are swollen I would see a doctor sooner rather than later, that can be more serious health issues.

Some meal replacements are loaded with refined sugars and fiber.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Tropical_Willie That would explain why I got sick in university. I thought that I was so clever. Getting a prescription for 3 replacement drinks a day for $2 co-pay. I thought that I didn’t have to eat and could save money when I lived on campus off season almost alone with the international students.

Is it possible you have an ovarian cyst? My stomach was so big and hard before I had surgery to remove several large cysts from my ovaries and uterus. My weight was already down before that surgery because I was having significant gastric symptoms, so I don’t know if there was any factor in weight, but what I thought was bloating a lot of the time was actually enlarged pelvic organs. My stomach was noticeably flatter after that surgery (and coincidentally is now bulging again and last ultrasound I had my dr mentioned that my uterus is “thick” again.)

Oh my goodness I hope that’s not what this is. I do drink warm water and baking soda. It helped a little bit. That is something to look into . thanks.

If you haven’t changed your diet or exercise level, that large of a change in weight in a short period of time might be an indication of a health problem. It might be worth calling your Primary care and scheduling a videoconference just to rule out any concerns they may have.

Meal replacements? Is there a reason you eat (drink???) so many of those? Seems like real vegetables and foods in general would be much much better for you, unless I am missing something.

I don’t drink so many it’s only in the morning sometimes when I don’t have a anything to eat while at work. I still eat regular meals but it’s mainly as a breakfast starter.
