What's wrong with these bananas?
About five days ago, I bought some very green, organic bananas, like I’ve done many times. Green ones were all that were available, in these days of hording and stripping the shelves bare during the Covid-19 scares.
A couple of days later, when they were all the bananas that I had left, these green bananas were still too green, so I got some more (near yellow) at the grocers. Now they’re gone, and the original bananas are still too green, and its time to buy more.
I was beginning to wonder if maybe these green ones were some other kind of banana, since they were still green after four or five days. So I tried peeling it. The stem had to be cut with strong scissors, but peeling it was the worst—the peeling all the way through the inside were more like wet bamboo (or at best, sugar cane, for those familiar with it).
Will these ever ripen, or should I just throw them out?

I think maybe they are plantains also. Are they bigger than most bananas you buy? I love Tostones, which are green plantains sliced and fried. Kind of like a fat French fry idea shaped in rounds, but banana flavor. It is not very banana tasting though since they are green. Add some salt. I doubt you want to experiment with a new recipe right now though.
I sorta wonder—but the sticker wrapped around them says Organic Bananas and they have a Dole Bananas sticker on each one.
The recipe sounds like it might be worth trying, but yes, not now. What culture?
A lot of Latin American countries make them. I most associate them with Cuban food, but I have a Venezuelan friend who makes them. I think the Puerto Ricans make them too. When they ripen you can make sweet plantains, you might be more familiar with that. I don’t like the sweet, but that would be more Memphis, since bananas foster is so popular there. Meanwhile, we don’t know for sure if you have plantains or bananas. It seems like if it says bananas they should be bananas.
#4011 bananas or PLU 4235 – - > PLANTAINS
They might be plantains, although I can’t be sure, but if they are, I don’t think you’re supposed to eat them raw, so be careful.
They really are plantains, I think. Eating these things raw would probably be like bamboo shoot torture. These are too hard to be bananas.
I think I’ll sneak them back into the store, when nobody’s looking.
