Will we see a return to cruising for entertainment?

Asked by Jons_Blond (8253points) April 22nd, 2020 from iPhone

With stay at home orders in place and the weather getting nicer do you think we’ll see a return of cruising in our cars for enjoyment?

Do you have fond memories of cruising when you were younger? When I was growing up in Las Vegas in the mid 80s we used to cruise The Strip. They have since put a stop to that.

Um… “cruising” doesn’t mean what you think it means. And I’m pretty sure COVID-19 has shut down what remained after HIV.

Um… cruising is exactly what I mean. It’s what we did way back when.

Cruising = driving around with no real destination. If your mind went to sex that ain’t my problem.

What colour hanky did you wear?

As a teen ager we called it pulling mainers, it was just driving up and down main street checking out any girls and seeing where your friends were.

Way back when is gone forever. Cruising was a big deal when you could earn a living in small town America. Back in the days when a teenager could get a job and pump every dime into a jalopy, and wastefully drive up and down the street showing off on gasoline at 20 cents a gallon. There is a much greater urgency to life these days for teenagers than in my day. At least that’s my perception. I suppose there are still kids riding around in cars, but I get the distinct impression that the tolerance of frivolous ambitions has narrowed considerably. Life is more ruthless, and all of us feel it. I had my American Graffiti episodes and remember them fondly, butI can tell you that I would be alarmed if either grandson showed any urge to repeat the process. Thinking back, it was VietNam that put an end to cruisin as the pastime of preference. By 64, the boys ALL knew that youth was no longer a luxury vacation. You left high school painfully aware that life was about some serious and dangerous shit!

A few friends of mine have said they went driving around because they had cabin fever. Mostly, it seems to be the men (husbands) wanting to drive aimlessly. Some of them just took their golf carts for a spin, not necessarily their cars, but that is a thing where I live. I see golf carts parked at golf courses watching people play, I guess maybe people are driving out to parks if they are open here, I don’t know if they are.

Gas certainly is cheap enough to cruise around a little, but then you need to deal with touching the gas pump eventually, unless you have an electric car, which is very appealing in the circumstance we are in.

From the current information about the decrease in pollution, oil sitting in excess in fields, and car insurance giving discounts, I don’t think many people are in a big cruising mindset, but maybe that will change as spring arrives

I think of cruising as crowded streets down main strips in towns or along the beaches, often done at night, but I guess at the beach it was daytime too. I don’t think anyone will look favorably at crowds for a while, so that probably won’t be happening like it used back in the day. A facebook friend mentioned that maybe the drive-in movie will become popular again, I associate that with the same era as cruising. My problem with that is what if you need to go to the bathroom? Now, public bathrooms are more stressful, having to touch the door, the lock, ugh. You need to make sure you have sanitizer with you I guess.

I can’t guess what will happen. Some of us are afraid to take risks of getting hurt, because hospitals seem like scary places, another reason to stay close to home. I do think family outings might increase, which will usually include a drive somewhere in a car. Cruising I associate more with teenagers and young adults though.

It hasn’t gone away where I am at.
I have a lot of memories of doing that.
This is a blast to go to.

I’m still sat here with a gormless grin across my face, picturing @Jonsblond naked :D
Driving around casually on mostly open roads blasting tunes out sounds good to me.
I apologise for that last sentence, commas had left the building unannounced.

There have been, in my area and maybe everywhere, more stories about birthdays and weddings where well-wishers drove by, honked, waved, and showed their enthusiasm for the birthday person or the wedded couple. Also added to that, for the birthdays, are sometimes the local Fire Department to add excitement.

Friends tell me their husbands want to take a ride, either with their wife or without, just to get out. Seems safer than going to a store, as you’re in your own vehicle with your own germs or the germs of others in your household, for those that are restless.

My husband and I moved to Madison, Wisconsin 18 months ago and we have yet to still see the entire city. It was a beautiful day today and we considered cruising around but ended up walking up to the lake which is a 5 minute walk. Some car cruising will definitely be in our future.
