Will you talk me out of doing a project boat, please?
My nephew sent me some photos of a boat that needs a home.
It’s a 1963 Chris Craft Holiday
It’s in his friend’s barn and needs a lot of work.
We can do this work but need to be talked out of it.more like I need to be talked out of it

You really don’t have the next 3 years to spend on this project. Just remember that it’s going to drastically cut into your pottery therapy
@SEKA -GA!...and my procrastination! XD
^ I wasn’t referring to your procrastination. Boat projects much like redecorating a house always take longer and usually more money than originally anticipated. It’s just a fact of life
Boats are a massive money sink.
Someone was quoted as saying “The two happiest days in your life: the day you buy a boat, and the day you get rid of it.”
Have you ever done anything like that? My friend was a professional who did restorations like that, and the work is painstaking, meticulous, and skilled. I would never take it on, and I used to make my living selling and detailing wooden boats.
OTOH, if you like that kind of persnickety work, you just might enjoy it. It would take a looong time.
Definition of a boat “A large hole in the water surrounded by wood that you pour money into.”
Don’t do it! A massive time sucker.
Ask yourself one thing…
What would Quint do?
There’s your answer for which there is no fee…you’re welcome!
@SEKA -We’ve done boats before. The largest was a 1947 46’ Chris Craft DCFB.
This little Holiday looks so cute, I can’t stand it!!
@lucillelucillelucille I hate to say this, but you sound like a 12 y/o having her first crush. Get yourself back together woman ;)
@SEKA -LOL! That is very close to the truth!
@elbanditoroso -I have heard that saying before and it is often very true but I am missing a boat in a big way.
Does the fact that you changed your avatar to a picture of a boat mean you’ve made up your mind?
@canidmajor -Yep, we have. The boat in my avatar is one that we sold a few years back.
My husband re-planked the port side and some of the starboard, along with mechanical stuff.
I repainted that along with refinishing the wood in the head,transom and swim platform.
If you go ahead and take this on, I don’t want to hear any whining.
@Tropical_Willie -I have heard that before. A friend aptly named his The Money Pit.
@chyna -I trying to resist this urge. The avatar is our old beast and I really miss it.
The vision of cuteness that I am talking about is a much smaller scale. I showed my hub the email I got and he doesn’t like this boat.
He then sent me a pic of the one he likes which is in between the one I like and the whopper we used to have.
Then I reminded him of the guy at the marina who wanted to give us the exact boat he likes for nothing. He just wanted it out of the yard
It was pretty torn up but still could be done….
:D
Well, then, not even gonna try to talk you out of this, it looks like a great project! Since you guys know what you are doing, I think you should take it on! The Chris Crafts are such terrific designs, and restored, can be outstanding! Have fun!
@canidmajor -I like your attitude! Now if I can only talk my hub into it.
Yep, I love those boats :)
It’s a classic
You should go for it.
I think it’s beautiful and absolutely worthy of attention, if you have the time and money for that investment. A real stunner when she’s made over, wow!
@josie -You too, have a great attitude!
@KNOWITALL -I usually see runabouts and the like on the water but rarely these.
You should do what makes you happy. Dealing with an old boat, the expenses, hassles and nightmares for a payoff of being able to motor around for however many hours seems more like a nightmare than something that would make me happy. That said, some people are into getting tied up and spanked, so whatever floats your boat (couldn’t help myself).
One would always need a BIGGER boat.
@gorillapaws -You have a great attitude as well.
@mazinger88 That’s what he said.
@janbb -Another GA!
I might have to show him all these answers.
Mind you my marriage probably ended partially around sailing and sailboats but I still have a romantic feeling for them. Just don’t make me scrape or caulk!
Fixing up an old boat is worse than fixing up an old house. It is a huge money pit and the repairs never really end. Get one thing fixed and you will find 2 more than need fixing.
@lucillelucillelucille
I remember see a boat with “The Money Pit” on Long Island Sound off the coast of Connecticut.
Restorations always take 1000X longer than you think they will.
Imagine how you would feel if you didn’t do it.
Then imagine how you would feel if you did do it.
Check your responses to each scenario to measure your feelings and you will have your own answer.
@seawulf575 -Then you get rid of it, forget about the pain after awhile & start again.
It’s like dating. I have heard.
@Tropical_Willie -My neighbor has a sailboat named Half-Fast.
That might be why I have never seen him underway without the help of a motor.XD
@Inspired_2write -Good suggestion.
I just asked my husband those q’s.unprintable yet funny answers
The main problem is getting him to like a boat that he doesn’t. XD
@janbb -I could compromise with the boat he likes but will have to wait until a deal comes along.
If it has been sitting out of water for years the wood has dried out and shrunk. There will be leaks everywhere. Sorry.
This would be a great project for an enthusiast.
@LuckyGuy -All true…. but give it a chance! :)
We used to keep our woodie hanging in slings for a day or two to soak up the water before launching.It’s hard to believe they float.
I am on the losing end of all this with my husband :)
^You kept your Woodie hanging?
@chyna -Sometimes it has to be done. XD
