In the U.S., how do you get school (K-12) records, college and postgraduate -- and what if something is missing or inaccurate?
No real-world scenario here. Just wondering if they are even available or retrievable, and by whom, and what to do if anything is out of order here.

I got my grandmothers college information. I just wrote NYU and the sent it to me. Not her full record, but that she graduated.
I ordered a copy of my diploma at one point also.
I just wrote the schools I think. Maybe I called and they told me what to do.
For k-12 I would call the school or school system and ask what to do.
After 50 years school records are destroyed in the state I went to high school. You can ask to have them sent to you or pick them up.
For. Colleges and universities, one writes or calls the Registrar.. For elementary and high school, one calls the district office.
One has to provide proof of identity. And elementary schools don’t keep their records more than ten years or so. And it would just be a record of enrollment/attendance.
Recently, my 4th grade class from the early 1960s wanted to hold a tribute for our teacher. We contacted the school and asked if they still had class records . Sadly, the answer was “no”.
One of the “kids” could remember everyone’s name and where the sat in the room! We used that info to do a search for classmates. We found about ¾ of the class.
