In a shortage how much would you be willing to pay for meat?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24892points) May 11th, 2020

Last week I saw a single excellent beef rib steak for $18.88. I bought it and it was perfect. I won’t do that again untill Covid19 is over. I am grateful.
I will stick to my t.v. diners for meat and vegetables.

I am ok without a lot of meat. In a pinch, if I were really wanting it, I could get a dinner at Outback for about $15 for 6 oz piece of steak with two sides, which is good enough for me. I could do a $2 burger at McD’s if I wanted to go the cheaper route.

As for my daughter, who is on the verge of becoming a teen, she likes steak. For her, I’d pay $6 a pound or maybe a little more. I’d cut a piece off hers and take it for myself. That’s what I often do now. I’ll give her a pork chop and I’ll cut off about a third and I’m ok (with sides dishes, too).

I get pork chops a lot, because they’re cheap – less than 2 dollars per pound. I recently bought a lot of pork chops at the supermarket and chop meat at Costco, so I have a pretty good supply right now, in the freezer, individually portioned and wrapped up. Dinner tonight was a small amount of hamburger meat, stir fried with rice and veggies. Probably a half pound of hamburger meat or less and it was stretched with the rice and veggies.

If meat prices got really crazy, I’d just have to tell my daughter that we have to cut it out except for now and then.

I don’t eat mammal meat.

I wouldn’t pay any more for chicken than I did before Covid-19.
I’d pay a little more than that for salmon.

I almost never buy mammal meat. Thanks to @Brian1946 for categorizing it. It’s interesting the term is not used in the same way as fowl and fish.

I am accustomed to chicken at $0.99 to $1.99 US/pound. At $2.99 I would cut back and at $3.99 I would abstain.

Eggs over $4.00/dozen are too much for me.

A vegetarian diet is OK with me. I wouldn’t mind being priced into it. Though I suppose if it comes to that, the price of beans will soar, too.

We have landed in interesting times.

Vegetarian here, I guess the better question for me would be the price of vegetables.
