According to this article they were in common use up to the nineteenth century. Most public forms of torture and humiliation disappeared between the 17th and 19th centuries. Before the Enlightenment, there were public hangings, debtor’s prisons, drawing and quartering and arrests for witchcraft. it is amazing how much change there was in just 200 years. For more of this, I highly recommend Steven Pinker’s book, The Better Angels of Our Nature
