Why didn't they plead guilty earlier?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33577points) May 21st, 2020

Lori Loughlin and her husband, who paid bribes to get their kids into college link

Other people who were arrested pled guilty months ago, and have already served their time.

Why did Loughlin wait so long to plead guilty to the obvious?

This is perfect timing. Because of the virus, she hopes to spend her jail time at home.
Of course, she couldn’t have foreseen this. I think she really thought she could get out of it by saying she was tricked into believing she was merely donating to the college. As that was becoming more obviously not working for her, this came up.

They are both going to do prison time.

I think they were hoping it would blow over.

Buying time to come up with a way to get out of it, I suppose.

I think she thought she’d win the case. Now, realizing it’s not looking good for her, and probabliy upon advice of her counsel, she decides to plead guilty.

What I had been hearing is that when the feds bring charges against you, they have an ironclad case and they charge you with everything.

They really thought they were wealthy/famous enough to get out of it. They exhausted every other avenue at their disposal. Their lawyer finally got it through their thick skulls to take the final plea bargain or they were really going to jail.

They thought they could hide from the truth forever. But you can’t, and they finally figured it out.
Interestingly, it is sort of like the virus that causes Covid-19. People think they can hide forever and it will go away. But it won’t, and some folks are figuring that out.
