I’m researching the hell out of open source or proprietary Web applications to facilitate a business network. Any more obscure suggestions?

It really depends on what you want it to do. Do you want forums or members? For my business, I use PHP-Fusion. I have support forums, and owners of my products can register them for support.
I don’t know if it does exactly what you want, but ning.com is a pretty good “create your own network” site – I’ve used it for networking people working on a common project, so it might work for your business needs…
The current best and most complete open source social network is Elgg. If you want to a service that hosts it for you and is customizable you have a lot of options. TechCrunch (a leading reviewer of web startups) reviewed nine:

I can say a bit about one company on that list, CrowdVine, because I founded it. We’re very focused on connecting people and then getting out of their way. This tends to work best in business situations like conferences or intranets.
