What’s to be said for or against those said to “get by on their looks”?
Is such a statement necessarily a charge or insult? I mean all of us understand how Hollywood, advertising, modeling, etc are honorable enterprises with stereotypical requirements. So where’s the rub if any?

I’ll start it off with the obvious “LUCKY”
Always look out for number 1, yourself, first.
To quote War Machine: “We work with what we have.”
If you got it, use it, but have a backup plan — ‘cuz looks fade.
Here is an excerpt from a Washington Post interview of Candice Bergen.
———-
Beauty “is not nothing,” says Bergen, attired in navy and fuchsia, J.Crew and Armani. “It’s to be dealt with. Nobody ever thinks of that. It’s often the elephant in the room, and you have to work to put people at ease.” The noted ventriloquist Edgar Bergen cautioned his daughter: “You know, Candy, it’s the beautiful women who commit suicide. It’s the beautiful women who struggle in life.”
Thanks, Dad. But she understood that he spoke from experience: “I mean, he dated Ava Gardner.”
She listened. “It’s harsh,” she says. “But I did exactly what he told me. I pursued my other interests, I wrote and I photographed. I never asked for a mirror on the set. Ever. I’m the only female or male that I’ve seen who didn’t care. I mean, once your makeup is done, that’s it. I don’t have much vanity, though more as I get older.”
Nothing wrong with using your good looks to help you get where you want to go. I think the only time it is a problem is when someone truly can’t do a job because they lack the skill and were only hired because they look good. Plenty of pretty people are smart and are skilled at their jobs. If the job has to do specifically with looks, like being a model, then certainly we can’t fault the person for looking good.
Almost anyone can pull themselves together to look good. A lot of people don’t realize that. Especially if you have money. Money can help you look pretty. Make-up, hair, clothes, you would be shocked how people can transform, especially women.
Beauty fades, dumb is forever – Judy Sheindlin
I had a lot of advantages because of my looks. I got away with a lot. As a consequence I became very self confident, but I don’t think I was ever conceited.
However, I never asked for special treatment. I never counted on it. It just happened.
I think those that depend on their looks to get by can find themselves in some very shallow, disappointing, unhappy relationships. Melania Trump comes to mind. Also Nicole Simpson.
@Dutchess_III I’d agree with that, but even worse I find my friends who are primarily focused on looks for an SO almost never wind up in long lasting relationships.
Our society is obsessed with looks. Some research shows that people treat good looking people better and they earn more money. It also makes people jelaous, hencethe expression.
