Do you have any recommendations for purchasing a pressure washer for home use?

Asked by jca2 (16892points) June 14th, 2020

I am looking to buy a pressure washer (also known as a power washer) for cleaning my deck and other areas around my house.

I used to have an electric one and I remember it was ok.

Someone suggested I buy a gas powered one, which may be stronger and also is not hindered by the electrical cord.

Do you have any suggestions about purchase options or features which I should look for?

Gas powered ones are more powerful, but a lot more money, and maintenance changing the oil in them cleaning the filters and so on, just for the convenience of no cord?

And funny how people are saying go cordless you are still going to have a garden hose hooked to it.
Go to consumer reports and see what they have to say about a good electric one,I think you will be happier .
Also remember unless you are very good at draining the water out of it, store it in a place where it won’t freeze in the winter.
Want some quick pros and cons?
Gas powered one…
pro no electrical cord.
Con= more money than a good electrical one
Con= exhaust fumes.
Con= a lot louder than an electric one.
Electric power washer.
Con=having to have it hooked to an electric cord.
pro=cheaper that a gas powered washer.
pro= quieter than a gas powered washer.
pro =you can use them in an enclosed space,no exhaust fumes.
Hope this helps whatever way you choose.

I had an electric power washer that did an okay job, but wasn’t super powerful. I just had my house pressure washed recently (before painting) by a gas powered and it blasted off stuff my electric couldn’t touch. However it was almost too powerful since the guy waved it over one of my windows and it sliced the screen in two. I would go with a gas powered if I were going to buy one, but I would strongly suggest using it cautiously.

Good price, similar power to the I have, unwieldy size with all that frame and wheels stuff.

Please remember @jca2 , @canidmajor power washer is a Ryobi which is a top of the line brand the one you are looking at looks more like a generic brand while it might fit your need perfectly but it is still not a top of the line brand.

Good advice, @SQUEEKY2. I didn’t order anything yet. Still shopping and pondering!

The Greenworks 2000 psi comes with a 3 year warranty which is really good and matches Ryobi’s. But check Loews as well as Costco’s online price before you buy (if you buy). I think you can get the same washer if you order for pickup from Loews for $160.

There is another difference between Gas and Electric.
The most power you can draw from typical house plug is 15 amps at 120 volts . That translates to about 1650 Watts or 2 hp. If you use an extension cord that number is reduced. So, the most power you can expect from an electric unit is 2 hp.
Gasoline powered units can be in the 6 hp to 10 hp range. Some are much more. You can cover a lot more area in the same time and with greater pressure
But gasoline units are a pain to run and maintain.
If you don’t have a lot of work to do, go with an electric and understand you will be spraying from a distance of only 4 to 6 inches and will have a pattern about 4 inches wide. That is probably enough. It sure beats scrubbing by hand.
The small electrics are much lighter and smaller than the gas powered units and you can store it in your basement without any gasoline odor.

When I need to use one I borrow a friend’s gasoline powered unit. I think it is 10 hp and weighs a ton.

I’ve ordered this one: https://www.costco.com/a-i-power-2700psi-2.3gpm-gas-pressure-washer.product.100343716.html

The good thing with Costco is they have a great return policy, and I can return it and anything else I order online right to the store. So I’ll try out the new pressure washer when I get it, and I’ll let you all know.

That looks very nice. It’s not too big and only weighs 57 pounds so you can roll it easily. The engine is small enough so it should pulls start without trouble. Good choice.
