What do you do to escape all of this madness?

Asked by Mama_Cakes (11173points) July 21st, 2020 from iPhone

We’re living in strange times. How do you distract yourself from the doom and gloom? What’s your escape?

I try and avoid the news, if I can help it. I don’t go searching for it anymore. I’m taking a break.

Besides that, reading and cooking more. Binge watching crime shows on Netflix and planning my big move to the States.

Painting while listening to podcasts about movies. Getting into the flow of what you’re doing silences any other noise.

l don’t. The only way out is though. That aside I eat and watch YouTube.

The key word is escape.
Why do people want to escape rather than confront?
Escapism is an evasion and can lead to neurotic behaviours.
Which is a form of sickness.
Who wants to be sick?

Read fiction. Escape fiction, nothing of any serious nature. SF is good.

@josie I haven’t been able to see my fiancé for four months because of Covid. The U.S./Canada border is closed. That’s prevented us from being together. Not knowing when it will open is hard. The numbers in the United States are high and not going down. The news is depressing. I keep hearing of couples and family members being separated. Canadians have a nasty attitude towards Americans right now. Acting all smug. It’s ugly. You see it in the news and social media.

That’s my experience anyway.

@Mama_Cakes

That’s rough re you and your fiancé. Sorry to hear it.
I can sort of relate on a lesser scale. My GF is a doc and she got COVID and I didn’t see her for a over a month. She got it, gave it to me and by the time we served our respective quarantines, weeks had passed.

A pandemic and the ensuing social and economic chaos sucks.

But my point was, there is no escaping the tides of history. Especially a virus for which their is no vaccine or treatment, or a social movement borne of a long period of frustration and economic stress from, among other things, the same virus. There’s no escape. There is only evasion or confrontation.

Re Canada-
Canada exists because Crown loyalists had a nasty attitude towards the revolutionary Americans.

I walk in nature. Feel the weather on my face,

“I get the news I need from the weather report…”

Not much has changed. I pretty much retired a few years ago when I got cancer. Now I just watch the rain, hang out in the woodshop, watch tv, feed the ducks in the pond in the front-yard, and do push-ups.

No kids, no car, no mortgage, no fucks given.

Just log out of Fluther ;-}
Long arse dog walks are ideal for this, no phone, no shit clogging your airwaves.
Just me, him & a flood of clean fresh air.

@mama_cakes Your situation really sucks. Now that Trump has said masks are patriotic, maybe America will finally get their case number down. We can only hope.

A few of my Canadians friends told me early on, like back in March, that Canadians were angry with America. That America was prohibiting the sake of PPE to Canada, or something like that.

I have friends in Europe who can’t come to America now because they would have to quarantine. It’s a mess.

Can you cross the border if you quarantine?

Escape from all the madness or you’ll go nuts. HA!

I focus on having fun. (Cycle, paddles canoes, sail Hobie Cat 16 and Cal20’s, walking, playing with my cats, gardening, playing in the internet, TV watching).

Good health!

I think you need or have to escape the news for at least a part of each day or go bonkers. I read, garden, or just sit out on my deck when I’m done with work for the day.

I pray. For you all, for myself and my family, for the sick and hurting and for government leaders and medical people everywhere.
