What was your last interaction with a wild animal like?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) July 24th, 2020

A sparrow was hanging on the screen about a foot away, watching me paint yesterday.
It stayed for quite awhile and wasn’t afraid at all, even with the music blasting.
Have you had any interesting encounters lately?

I yelled at the starling who’s been eating all my raspberries and the sparrow who was chirping as his look out.

@janbb -Send it over here to kill the blackberry bush that won’t die.
I cut it down, set a few branches to burn on the ground and some took root!
They are tough plants.
As for your raspberries, you might be able to put netting over it to keep them from getting the berries.

janbb's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille I did! And it poked its long effing beak through the netting!

@janbb -Oh wow.
I know they are persistent. They mob my feeder in spring.
I wonder if the plastic owl method would work?

janbb's avatar

Thinking of that or a whirligig for next year.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@janbb – I’d try it. Good luck!

I saw a bunny. He was blended in the road and was thinking that he was hidden. I was wondering if I can feed it oatmeal.

This morning on our walk Oscar chased a pigeon.
They take forever to fly high enough to reach a branch…could do with a rocket up their arse.

@RedDeerGuy1 -I know they like beans. They eat my plants right to ground level.
@ucme And I think it’s gonna be a long long time…go ahead and sing a long to “Rocketpigeon”

@unreal – I don’t love them either.

It involved a deer, a car and it didn’t end well.

One little dove had a broken wing in my front ditch, which was fatal due to blood loss, so I cuddled her and put her in my wild garden to die peacefully.

Then about two weeks ago, I had a little crow knocking at my patio doors sitting on the handle, so I left her treats. She brought me a pretty Robin’s egg then left.

This morning a mama possum with all her babies on her back were all in my backyard, so I watched a bit and let her be.

Our hummingbird family is still here, too, so we’ve been refilling the feeder again while it’s so hot out.

@KNOWITALL -Awww :( My doves came back a few days ago.I thought something happened to them.
I think possums are cute. Many do not share my opinion.
I love hummingbirds :)

@lucillelucillelucille Yeah, I love it here in the country. Even though we’re in city limits, it’s a rural setting so we plant native species for the wild life and we’ve been well-rewarded over the last two decades with visitors.

We have a carpet of wild strawberries in the spring, plus we’ve left some wild blackberries, honeysuckle and a beautiful mimosa in front that the animals love.

Possums are adorable, we have quite a few due to the huge cat population on our block. But when confronted by a dog, they aren’t so cute, lots of big scary teeth. Luckily they are nocturnal so they hide in our deep bushes and hedges during the day, so the dogs rarely confront them.

@KNOWITALL My old dog used to kill them. She got skunked a few times too. That’s a nightmare.
A friend tells me that they eat ticks.Made me like them more.:)
Once in awhile, I’ll see something out of the ordinary around here. A mink in front of my house, a beaver on the neighbor’s lawn.
Then there was my next door neighbor in her leopard print “love outfit”.Don’t let the dog out after midnight, you might see something unexpected and :P

Every day I see the little lizards that are all over in Florida, I think they are called anoles? I won’t count those. I also see small birds in the trees in my backyard quite a bit, so I won’t count those.

The most recent big event with wildlife was two cranes walking across my front lawn. I see them quite a bit in the area, but never right in front of my house before. They paused on my lawn long enough that I could snap a photo. I think maybe they were eating worms from my lawn, it had rained quite a bit. Do they eat worms? They are tall birds if you don’t know, so they make a significant impression. Here is a video. They are usually in pairs so it is odd this one is alone. I assume they stay together for life like geese, but I don’t know that for a fact.

I saw a bunny near my front porch the other day when I opened the door. He stayed very still and hoped I wasn’t hungry.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie Anole lizards are pretty.
I bet the cranes eat them. I went looking for sandhill cranes and managed to actually find some. They’re impressive birds.
My niece tells me that they’ve chased her before. lol

JLeslie's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille I haven’t seen the cranes chasing people, but I have seen swans and geese do that. Birds can be very aggressive, especially if they have newborns with them.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -Don’t I know it! LOL
I’ve had geese challenge me before (they won) and a pair of nesting swans in front of my house.
Swans are fearless.
