A bread-and-butter pickle is a pickle that has been brined in a marinade that is both sweet and tangy. They were named by a farming couple who would trade them to their local grocer for bread and butter during bad years.
^^ Yep. My mother used to make them regularly. She loved them. I thought they were awful, or maybe I just couldn’t get past the name. Too bad I didn’t know the origin.
I have never liked pickles.
I LOVE pickles! I prefer dill though.
They are kind of sweet, as mentioned above. I think of them as usually being sliced in thin rounds and put in sandwiches and burgers. I associate them with the middle of the country, even though you can find them everywhere.
I grew up on sour, half sour, and dill pickles, so butter pickles are not what I expect from a pickle at all.
Plus, I like pickles on the side not inside of a sandwich. I pick the pickles off of a McDonald’s hamburger.
The term “bread and butter” refers to “a means of sustenance or livelihood.”

That’s my memory. My mom made those plus big dill pickles. My brother has carried on her pickling and pie-baking skills.
We always have a jar of pickles in the frig. Right now it is dill spears. Next it will be a hot and spicy bread and butter.
Somebody in some movie had a line about the word “pickle” being a funny word and the “k” sound being inherently funny. I think there’s something to that.
I love B&B Pickles! My favorite.
